Abstract

An improved hood provides for the attaching of endoluminal prosthesis within corporeal lumens. The hook is integrally formed with framing structure and is preset into an outward bend, but is resiliently flexible so as to form a substantially straight profile when compressed. The hook is capable of impinging upon the corporeal lumen and thereby securing the prosthesis. The hook may be configured for intraluminal delivery and deployment. A novel method of manufacturing said hook is also provided.

Claims (37)

1. A mechanism for securing an endoprosthesis to corporeal tissue of a corporeal lumen, the mechanism comprising:

a tubular frame having a central axis;

an elongate member having a first end attached to the tubular frame and a second end that is movable away from the tubular frame so as to impinge upon corporeal tissue;

an incision formed through the tubular frame, the incision creating an opening in the tubular frame extending from a beginning of the incision at the first end, around the second end, and to an ending of the incision at the first end of the elongate member, wherein the elongate member includes a middle portion between the first end and the second end; and

a pair of stress relief cut-outs formed through the tubular frame and located adjacent the first end of the elongate member at both ends of the incision;

wherein the incision defines the first and second ends and a point on the second end of the elongate member that have a combined shape that corresponds to a shape of the opening in the tubular frame;

wherein a length from the first end to the point on the second end of the elongate member is oriented along the central axis; and

wherein the tubular frame has a compressed configuration at which the second end of the elongate member extends a first distance from the frame in a first direction and at which the middle portion extends a second distance from the frame in a second direction opposite the first direction.

2. The mechanism of claim 1 , wherein the stress relief cut-out is circular.

3. The mechanism of claim 1 , wherein the stress relief cut-out is wider than the incision.

4. The mechanism of claim 1 , wherein the tubular frame has a compressed configuration at which the elongate member is in alignment with the tubular frame and an expanded configuration at which the elongate member is disposed radially outwardly from the tubular frame.

5. The mechanism of claim 1 , wherein the elongate member is closely bounded, except at the first end, by a narrow incision through the frame.

6. The mechanism of claim 1 , wherein the elongate member is predisposed with an outward curve.

7. The mechanism of claim 1 , wherein the tubular frame lacks an internal structure located along a central axis of the tubular frame.

8. The mechanism of claim 1 , wherein:

the tubular frame has a frame end defining an opening; and

the tubular frame lacks a structure at the frame end extending across the opening.

9. A mechanism for securing an endoprosthesis to corporeal tissue of a corporeal lumen, the mechanism comprising:

a tubular frame having a central axis;

an incision formed through the tubular frame, the incision creating an opening in the tubular frame extending from a beginning of the incision at a first end, around a second end, and to an ending of the incision at the first end of an elongate member, wherein the elongate member includes a middle portion between the first end and the second end;

a pair of stress-relief cut-outs formed through the tubular frame and located adjacent the first end of the elongate member at both ends of the incision; and

the elongate member having a pointed end movable away from the tubular frame so as to impinge upon corporeal tissue, the elongate member formed on the tubular frame by an incision through the frame that defines the first and second ends and a point on the second end of the elongate member that have a combined shape that corresponds to a shape of the opening in the tubular frame;

wherein a length from the first end to the point on the second end of the elongate member is oriented along the central axis; and

wherein the tubular frame has a compressed configuration at which the second end of the elongate member extends a first distance from the frame in a first direction and at which the middle portion extends a second distance from the frame in a second direction opposite the first direction.

10. The mechanism of claim 9 , wherein the stress relief cut-out is circular.

11. The mechanism of claim 9 , wherein the stress relief cut-out is wider than the incision.

12. The mechanism of claim 9 , wherein the tubular frame has a compressed configuration at which the elongate member is in alignment with the tubular frame and an expanded configuration at which the elongate member is disposed radially outwardly from the tubular frame.

13. The mechanism of claim 9 , wherein the elongate member is closely bounded, except at the pair of stress-relief cut-outs at the first end, by a narrow incision through the frame.

14. The mechanism of claim 9 , wherein the elongate member is predisposed with an outward curve.

15. The mechanism of claim 9 , wherein the tubular frame lacks an internal structure located along a central axis of the tubular frame.

16. The mechanism of claim 9 , wherein: the tubular frame has a frame end defining a tubular opening; and

the tubular frame lacks a structure at the frame end extending across the tubular opening.

17. A method of manufacturing a mechanism for securing an endoprosthesis to corporeal tissue of a corporeal lumen, the method comprising:

forming an elongate member on a tubular frame having a central axis, wherein the elongate member is formed with an incision formed through the tubular frame creating an opening in the tubular frame extending from a beginning of the incision at a first end, around a second end, and to an ending of the incision at the first end of the elongate member, wherein the elongate member includes a middle portion between the first end and the second end and wherein the elongate member has the first end attached to the tubular frame and a pointed second end that is movable from the frame so as to impinge upon corporeal tissue, including removing material from the frame to form an incision extending around the pointed end that defines the first and second ends and a point on the second end of the elongate member that have a combined shape that corresponds to a shape of the opening in the tubular frame, wherein a length from the first end to the point on the second end of the elongate member is oriented along the central axis and wherein the tubular frame has a compressed configuration at which the second end of the elongate member extends a first distance from the frame in a first direction and at which the middle portion extends a second distance from the frame in a second direction opposite the first direction, and removing additional material from the frame to form a pair of stress relief cut-outs located adjacent the first end of the elongate member at both ends of the incision.

18. The method of claim 17 further comprising forcing the pointed end of the elongate member away from the frame.

19. The method of claim 17 further comprising heat setting the elongate member to have an outward curve.

20. The method of claim 17 , wherein forming the elongate member includes making the stress relief cut-out wider than the incision.
