Abstract

Assemblies for HVAC systems and methods of operating HVAC systems are disclosed, including a method of operating an HVAC system having a compressor assembly and a condenser assembly. The compressor assembly includes a compressor having a compressor motor that is susceptible to backspinning and capable of generating electric power when backspinning. The condenser assembly includes a condenser motor operatively coupled to a fan. The condenser assembly is electrically coupled to the compressor assembly. The method includes using the condenser motor as an electric load to dissipate electric power generated by the compressor motor when the compressor motor backspins.

Claims (25)

1. An assembly for an HVAC system, the assembly comprising:

a compressor assembly including a compressor having a compressor motor; and

a condenser assembly including a condenser motor operatively coupled to a fan;

the compressor motor susceptible to backspinning due to a reverse refrigerant flow through the compressor assembly and the condenser assembly, the compressor motor capable of generating electric power when backspinning;

the condenser assembly electrically coupled to the compressor assembly and configured to dissipate electric power generated by the compressor motor when the compressor motor backspins due to the reverse refrigerant flow through the compressor assembly and the condenser assembly by using the electric power generated by the backspinning compressor motor to operate the condenser motor or supply a DC or low frequency current to the condenser motor.

2. The assembly of claim 1 wherein the condenser assembly is directly coupled to the compressor assembly.

3. The assembly of claim 2 wherein the condenser assembly is directly coupled to the compressor assembly via a shared voltage bus for powering the condenser assembly and the compressor assembly.

4. The assembly of claim 3 wherein the condenser assembly includes a condenser inverter having an input, the compressor assembly includes a compressor inverter having an input, and the condenser inverter input is directly coupled to the compressor inverter input and the shared voltage bus.

5. The assembly of claim 1 wherein the compressor assembly includes a controller and the condenser assembly includes a controller.

6. The assembly of claim 5 wherein the compressor controller and the condenser controller are located on the same circuit board.

7. The assembly of claim 6 wherein the compressor controller and the condenser controller are integrated in the same piece of silicon or on the same chip.

8. The assembly of claim 5 wherein the condenser controller is configured to operate the condenser motor when the compressor motor backspins.

9. The assembly of claim 5 wherein the condenser controller is configured to supply a DC or low frequency current to the condenser motor when the condenser motor is stopped and the compressor motor backspins.

10. The assembly of claim 5 wherein the condenser controller is configured to increase a speed of the condenser motor when the compressor motor backspins.

11. The assembly of claim 1 wherein the condenser assembly is electrically coupled to the compressor assembly via a coupling circuit having one or more circuit elements.

12. The assembly of claim 11 wherein the compressor assembly includes an inverter, the condenser assembly includes an inverter, and the coupling circuit includes a diode coupled between an input of the compressor inverter and an input of the condenser inverter.

13. The assembly of claim 12 wherein the compressor assembly includes a controller, the condenser assembly includes a controller, and the compressor controller and the condenser controller are integrated in the same piece of silicon or on the same chip.

14. The assembly of claim 1 wherein the compressor is a scroll or screw compressor.

15. The assembly of claim 5 further comprising a system controller, wherein two or more of the system controller, the condenser controller and the compressor controller are integrated in an FPGA, DSP, EPLD, microcontroller, microprocessor or any combination thereof.

16. The assembly of claim 5 further comprising a system controller, a PFC circuit for generating an output voltage, and a PFC circuit controller operatively connected to the PFC circuit, wherein two or more of the system controller, the PFC circuit controller, the condenser controller and the compressor controller are integrated in an FPGA, DSP, EPLD, microcontroller, microprocessor or any combination thereof.

17. A method of operating an HVAC system having a compressor assembly and a condenser assembly, the compressor assembly including a compressor having a compressor motor that is susceptible to backspinning due to a reverse refrigerant flow through the compressor assembly and the condenser assembly and capable of generating electric power when backspinning, the condenser assembly including a condenser motor operatively coupled to a fan, the condenser assembly electrically coupled to the compressor assembly, the method comprising using the condenser motor as an electric load to dissipate electric power generated by the compressor motor when the compressor motor backspins due to the reverse refrigerant flow through the compressor assembly and the condenser assembly by using the electric power generated by the backspinning compressor motor to operate the condenser motor or supply a DC or low frequency current to the condenser motor.

18. The method of claim 17 wherein the HVAC system includes a bus voltage for powering the compressor assembly, and wherein using the condenser motor as an electric load includes operating the condenser motor when the bus voltage for powering the compressor assembly exceeds a predetermined value.

19. The method of claim 18 wherein operating the condenser motor includes maintaining said compressor bus voltage above a minimum level.

20. The method of claim 17 wherein using the condenser motor as an electric load includes increasing a speed of the condenser motor when the compressor motor backspins.
