Abstract

A system, apparatus, and method may provide laser beams of two or more wavelengths from diode pumped solid-state laser sources ( 220, 222, 224 ). The beam paths of these laser beams with different wavelengths, which are generated by the laser sources ( 220, 222, 224 ), may be aligned along a common optical axis 280 by an optical configuration, to treat at least one target area. Frequency-doubled laser beams, output from a plurality of diode pumped solid state laser cavities, may be passed through fold mirrors (M 2 , M 5 , M 8 ), and combined on a common optical axis 280 , using one or more combiner mirrors (M 10 , M 11 , M 12 ), to unify the beam paths. Selected laser beams may be delivered to a target using one or more delivery systems.

Claims (23)

1. A diode pumped solid state laser system for applying laser energy to a target ophthalmic tissue of a human for medical purposes, comprising:

three diode pumped solid state laser cavities able to produce beams of three respective wavelengths travelling in associated paths, the three laser cavities comprising a source of green laser light, a source of yellow laser light and a source of red laser light; and

a controller to selectively control activation of at least one of the three diode pumped solid state laser cavities and to selectively control associated power levels of the produced beams of the at least one of the three diode pumped solid state laser cavities; and

an optical configuration to align the associated paths of said beams along a common optical axis to the target ophthalmic tissue.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein at least one said laser cavities comprises a primary laser section and a frequency doubling section.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein said primary laser section comprises a pump diode laser source.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein said optical configuration comprises at least one fold mirror.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein said optical configuration comprises one or more combiner mirrors to combine the paths of at least two of the three laser beams.

6. The system of claim 1 , comprising a plurality of optical ports associated with an output of said optical configuration.

7. The system of claim 1 , comprising at least one delivery system to deliver at least one of said laser beams to the target ophthalmic tissue.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein said three diode pumped solid state laser cavities produce beams of three respective wavelengths of 532 nm (green), 561 nm (yellow) and 659 nm (red).

9. The diode pumped solid state laser of system of claim 1 , further comprising one of a shutter or an attenuator along the common optical axis to limit or attenuate laser pulses respectively prior to the laser pulses reaching the target ophthalmic tissue.

10. An illumination method for treating ophthalmic tissue of a human being with a laser, comprising:

controlling activation of at least one of three diode pumped solid state laser cavities and power levels of beams produced by the at least one of the three diode pumped solid state laser cavities, the beams traveling in associated paths;

aligning the paths of the three diode pumped solid state generated laser beams having three respective wavelengths on a common optical path the three laser cavities comprising a source of green laser light, a source of yellow laser light and a source of red laser light; and

delivering at least one of said laser beams to a target area of ophthalmic tissue.

11. The method of claim 10 , comprising:

passing said one or more of the three laser beams through three or more respective fold mirrors; and

combining the paths of at least two of said three respective laser beams using one or more combiner mirrors.

12. The method of claim 10 , further comprising delivering an aiming beam substantially along said optical path.

13. The method of claim 10 , comprising channeling said three or more respective laser beams via one or more optical ports.

14. The method of claim 10 , comprising delivering said respective laser beams using one or more delivery systems.

15. The diode pumped solid state laser of system of claim 10 , further comprising one of limiting or attenuating laser pulses prior to the laser pulses reaching the target ophthalmic tissue using a shutter or an attenuator respectively along the common optical axis.
