Abstract

Methods and compositions useful for subterranean formation treatments, such as hydraulic fracturing treatments and sand control that include porous materials. Such porous materials may be selectively configured porous material particles manufactured and/or treated with selected glazing materials, coating materials and/or penetrating materials to have desired strength and/or apparent density to fit particular downhole conditions for well treating such as hydraulic fracturing treatments and sand control treatments. Porous materials may also be employed in selected combinations to optimize fracture or sand control performance, and/or may be employed as relatively lightweight materials in liquid carbon dioxide-based well treatment systems.

Claims (35)

1. A selectively configured porous particulate material comprising:

a porous particulate material, a chemical treatment applied to the porous particulate material, and a fluid encapsulated or entrapped within the pores of the porous particulate material;

wherein the encapsulated or entrapped fluid has an apparent specific gravity (ASG) lower than the ASG of the porous particulate material and the ASG of the chemical treatment;

wherein the porous particulate material is selected from the group consisting of polyolefins, styrene-divinylbenzene copolymers and polyalkylacrylate esters;

wherein the selectively configured porous particulate material exhibits crush resistance under a closure stress of from about 250 to 10,000 psi and has an ASG less than or equal to 2.4; and

wherein the selectively configured porous particulate is capable of maintaining said ASG when employed in well treatment compositions.

2. A composition comprising the selectively configured porous particulate material of claim 1 and a carrier fluid.

3. The composition of claim 2 , wherein the carrier fluid is salt water, fresh water, a liquid hydrocarbon, or a gas or a mixture thereof.

4. A selectively configured porous particulate material comprising:

a porous particulate material, a chemical treatment applied to the porous particulate material, and a fluid encapsulated or entrapped within the pores of the porous particulate material;

wherein the chemical treatment is selected from the group consisting of nylon, polyethylene, polystyrene, and mixtures thereof;

wherein the encapsulated or entrapped fluid has an apparent specific gravity (ASG) lower than the ASG of the porous particulate material and the ASG of the chemical treatment;

wherein the porous particulate material is not a cluster of particles and is selected from the group consisting of ceramics, polyolefins, styrene-divinylbenzene copolymers and polyalkylacrylate esters;

wherein the selectively configured porous particulate material exhibits crush resistance under a closure stress of from about 250 to 10,000 psi and has an ASG of less than or equal to 2.4; and

wherein the selectively configured porous particulate is capable of maintaining said ASG when employed in well treatment compositions.

5. The selectively configured porous particulate material of claim 4 , wherein the porous particulate material is a natural or non-natural porous ceramic.

6. The selectively configured porous particulate material of claim 4 , wherein the porous particulate material, prior to chemical treatment, has a porosity and fluid permeability such that a fluid may be drawn at least partially into its matrix by capillary action.

The selectively configured porous particulate material of claim 4 , wherein the porous particulate material, prior to chemical treatment, has a porosity and fluid permeability such that a penetrating material may be (i) drawn at least partially into its matrix using a vacuum; (ii) forced at least partially into its porous matrix under pressure; or (iii) a combination of (i) and (ii).

8. The selectively configured porous particulate material of claim 4 , having a size between from about 200 mesh to about 8 mesh.

9. The selectively configured porous particulate material of claim 4 , wherein the fluid permeability of the selectively configured porous particulate material is less than the fluid permeability of the porous particulate material, prior to chemical treatment.

10. A composition comprising the selectively configured porous particulate material of claim 4 and a carrier fluid.

11. The composition of claim 10 , wherein the carrier fluid is salt water, fresh water, a liquid hydrocarbon, or a gas or a mixture thereof.

12. A selectively configured porous particulate material comprising a porous particulate material, a chemical treatment applied to the porous particulate material, and a fluid encapsulated or entrapped within the pores of the porous particulate material;

wherein the encapsulated or entrapped fluid has an apparent specific gravity (ASG) lower than the ASG of the porous particulate material and the ASG of the chemical treatment;

wherein the porous particulate material is not a cluster of particles and is selected from the group consisting of porous ceramics, polyolefins, styrene-divinylbenzene copolymers and polyalkylacrylate esters;

wherein the selectively configured porous particulate material exhibits crush resistance under a closure stress of from about 250 to 10,000 psi and has an ASG less than or equal to 2.4; and

wherein the selectively configured porous particulate is capable of maintaining said ASG when employed in well treatment compositions.

13. The selectively configured porous particulate material of claim 12 , wherein the porous particulate material is a natural or non-natural porous ceramic.

14. The selectively configured porous particulate material of claim 12 , wherein the porous particulate material, prior to chemical treatment, has a porosity and fluid permeability such that a fluid may be drawn at least partially into its matrix by capillary action.

15. The selectively configured porous particulate material of claim 12 , wherein the porous particulate material, prior to chemical treatment, has a porosity and fluid permeability such that a penetrating material may be (i) drawn at least partially into its matrix using a vacuum; (ii) forced at least partially into its porous matrix under pressure; or (iii) a combination of (i) and (ii).

16. The selectively configured porous particulate material of claim 12 , having a size between from about 200 mesh to about 8 mesh.

17. The selectively configured porous particulate material of claim 12 , wherein the porous particulate material has a maximum length-based aspect ratio equal to or less than 5.

18. A composition comprising the selectively configured porous particulate material of claim 12 and a carrier fluid.

19. The composition of claim 18 , wherein the carrier fluid is salt water, fresh water, a liquid hydrocarbon, or a gas or a mixture thereof.

20. The composition of claim 18 , wherein the carrier fluid is non-gelled.
