Abstract

The invention relates to molding systems and related methods. In one aspect of the invention, a molding apparatus includes a first cylindrical roll that is rotatably coupled to a frame and an adjacent pressure device, the frame is configured so that a substrate can pass through a nip formed between the first cylindrical roll and the pressure device while a portion of the substrate extends laterally beyond at least the frame and the first cylindrical roll.

Claims (16)

1. A molding apparatus for molding touch fastener products comprising a plurality of fastener elements, the molding apparatus comprising:

a frame;

a first cylindrical roll defining a plurality of molding cavities that are shaped and arranged to form the fastener elements at a density of greater than 500 fastener elements per square inch, the first cylindrical roll having a first axis of rotation and first and second ends, the first end rotatably secured to the frame, the first cylindrical roll being cantilevered such that the first cylindrical roll is supported only at the first end; and

a pressure device adjacent to the first cylindrical roll and defining a nip between the pressure device and the first cylindrical roll, the nip capable of receiving a substrate,

wherein the cantilevered first cylindrical roll allows the substrate to pass through the nip while a portion of the substrate extends beyond the frame and the first cylindrical roll in a direction substantially parallel to the first axis of rotation.

2. The molding apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the pressure device is a second cylindrical roll.

3. The molding apparatus of claim 2 , wherein the second cylindrical roll has a resilient surface.

4. The molding apparatus of claim 2 , wherein the first and second cylindrical rolls are configured to allow the substrate to pass through the nip while the portion of the substrate extends beyond the second cylindrical roll in a direction substantially parallel to the first axis of rotation.

5. The molding apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the molding cavities are shaped to form hook-shaped fastener elements.

6. The molding apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising an extruder arranged to introduce resin into the nip.

7. The molding apparatus of claim 6 , wherein the extruder is arranged to apply the resin onto the first cylindrical roll at a point circumferentially spaced from the nip such that the resin can be carried into the nip by the first cylindrical roll as the first cylindrical roll rotates.

8. The molding apparatus of claim 6 , wherein at least a portion of the nip generates sufficient pressure to force at least some of the resin into the molding cavities to form fastener elements extending from a resin base.

9. The molding apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the molding cavities have undercut portions for forming engageable heads of the fastener elements.

10. The molding apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the mold roll comprises a series of ring-shaped plates that are arranged axially along a length of the mold roll and that cooperate with one another to form the molding cavities.

11. The molding apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the series of ring-shaped plates comprises etched or engraved plates and flat backing plates that cooperate with one another to form the molding cavities.

12. The molding apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the molding cavities are arranged to form the fastener elements at a density of greater than 1000 fastener elements per square inch.
