Abstract

An inkjet printhead has an elongate chassis, an ink distribution unit for connection to an ink supply, and a plurality of printhead modules supported along the elongate chassis. The printhead modules each define an elongate array of ink ejection nozzles. During use, the printhead modules are each supplied with ink from apertures in the elongate chassis which are in turn supplied by the ink distribution unit.

Claims (12)

1. An inkjet printhead comprising:

an elongate chassis;

an ink distribution unit for connection to an ink supply, and

a plurality of printhead modules supported along the elongate chassis, the printhead modules each define an elongate array of ink ejection nozzles; wherein during use,

the printhead modules are each supplied with ink from apertures in the elongate chassis which are in turn supplied by the ink distribution unit.

2. An inkjet printhead according to claim 1 wherein the longitudinal extent of the elongate arrays being parallel to each other and the longitudinal extent of each of the elongate arrays overlap each other with respect to the longitudinal extent of the elongate chassis.

3. An inkjet printhead according to claim 2 wherein the apertures in the elongate chassis are first apertures and the ink distribution unit has second apertures positioned in registration with the first apertures.

4. An inkjet printhead as claimed in claim 3 , wherein the ink distribution unit having a plurality of ink distribution passages for connecting the ink supply to a second set of apertures.

5. An inkjet printhead as claimed in claim 4 , wherein the longitudinal extent of each of the elongate arrays is inclined to the longitudinal extent of the elongate chassis.

6. An inkjet printhead as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the elongate chassis has a channel such that the ink distribution unit is supported in the channel and the plurality of printhead modules are supported on an exterior surface of the channel.

7. An inkjet printhead as claimed in claim 1 , wherein each of the printhead modules has a multi-layer substrate defining the elongate array of ink ejection nozzles, an exterior layer of the multi-layer substrate being a nozzle layer in which nozzle apertures are defined, the nozzle layer having integral side walls extending from an interior side of the nozzle layer.

8. An inkjet printhead as claimed in claim 7 , wherein the multi-layer substrate has CMOS layers and a layer of resistive heater elements, each of the resistive heater elements being positioned between the CMOS layers and one of the nozzle apertures respectively.
