Abstract

Prosthetic intervertebral discs and methods for using the same are described. The subject prosthetic discs include upper and lower endplates separated by a compressible core member. The prosthetic discs described herein include one-piece, two-piece, three-piece, and four-piece structures. The subject prosthetic discs exhibit stiffness in the vertical direction, torsional stiffness, bending stiffness in the saggital plane, and bending stiffness in the front plane, where the degree of these features can be controlled independently by adjusting the components of the discs. The interface mechanism between the endplates and the core members of several embodiments of the described prosthetic discs enables a very easy surgical operation for implantation.

Claims (27)

1. A prosthetic intervertebral disc for implantation between adjacent first and second vertebrae in a human spine comprising:

a compressible core member having an intermediate portion and an upper protrusion from an intermediate portion and a lower protrusion from an intermediate portion, the upper and lower protrusions being located on opposite sides of the compressible core member;

a first endplate having first endplate radial directions, the first endplate comprising a first plurality of slots each having a larger dimension and a smaller dimension and wherein the larger dimensions of the first plurality of slots are substantially aligned in respective first endplate radial directions, the first endplate being fixable to a first vertebra, the first endplate having a first surface surrounded by a second surface with the first and second surfaces being separated by a first edge, wherein the first surface receives and is in contact with the upper protrusion, and the second surface is in contact with a first area of the compressible core member adjacent to the upper protrusion;

a second endplate having second endplate radial directions, the second endplate comprising a second plurality of slots each having a larger dimension and a smaller dimension and wherein the larger dimensions of the second plurality of slots are substantially aligned in respective second endplate radial directions, the second endplate being fixable to a second vertebra adjacent the first vertebra in the spine, the second endplate having a third surface surrounded by a fourth surface with the third and fourth surfaces being separated by a second edge, wherein the third surface receives and is in contact with the lower protrusion, and the fourth surface is in contact with a second area of the compressible core member adjacent to the lower protrusion; and

at least one fiber extending through the first plurality of slots in the first endplate and through the second plurality of slots in the second endplate.

2. The prosthetic intervertebral disc of claim 1 , wherein the compressible core member comprises a polymeric material.

3. The prosthetic intervertebral disc of claim 1 , wherein the compressible core member comprises an elastomeric material.

4. The prosthetic intervertebral disc of claim 3 , wherein the elastomeric material is selected from the group consisting of polysiloxane, polyurethane, poly(ethylene propylene) copolymer, polyvinylchloride, poly(tetrafluoroethylene), other copolymers, and hydrogel.

5. The prosthetic intervertebral disc of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the first and second endplates are directly fixable respectively to the first and second vertebrae.

6. The prosthetic intervertebral disc of claim 1 , wherein the at least one fiber extends through each of the first plurality of slots of the first endplate and through each of the second plurality of slots of the second end plate.

7. The prosthetic intervertebral disc of claim 1 , wherein the at least one fiber comprises a plurality of fibers, wherein each of the plurality of fibers extends through each of the first plurality of slots of the first endplate and through each of the second plurality of slots of the second end plate.

8. The prosthetic intervertebral disc of claim 7 , wherein the plurality of fibers define two or more layers of fibers around the compressible core member.

9. The prosthetic intervertebral disc of claim 1 , wherein the at least one fiber comprises a metal.

10. The prosthetic intervertebral disc of claim 1 , wherein the at least one fiber comprises a plastic.

11. The prosthetic intervertebral disc of claim 1 , wherein the at least one fiber is a multifilament fiber.

12. The prosthetic intervertebral disc of claim 1 , wherein the at least one fiber is a monofilament fiber.

13. The prosthetic intervertebral disc of claim 1 , wherein the at least one fiber is encapsulated.

14. The prosthetic intervertebral disc of claim 1 , further comprising a first fixation member adapted to fix the first endplate to a vertebral body, the first fixation member extending from an outer surface of said first endplate.

15. The prosthetic intervertebral disc of claim 14 , further comprising a second fixation member adapted to fix the second endplate to a vertebral body, the second fixation member extending from an outer surface of said second endplate.

16. The prosthetic intervertebral disc of claim 14 , wherein the first fixation member comprises at least one anchoring fin.

17. The prosthetic intervertebral disc of claim 15 , wherein the first and second fixation members each comprise at least one anchoring fin.

18. The prosthetic intervertebral disc of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the endplates comprises a domed outer surface.

19. The prosthetic intervertebral disc of claim 1 , further comprising an annular capsule surrounding the compressible core member.

20. The prosthetic intervertebral disc of claim 19 , wherein the annular capsule is bellowed.

21. The prosthetic intervertebral disc of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the first and second endplates is metallic.

22. The prosthetic intervertebral disc of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the first and second endplates comprises a material is selected from the group consisting of titanium, titanium alloys, stainless steel, cobalt/chromium, ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMW-PE), polyetheretherketone (PEEK), ceramics, and graphite.

23. The prosthetic intervertebral disc of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the first and second endplates comprises titanium or a titanium alloy.
