Abstract

An elbow prosthesis constructed in accordance to one example of the present teachings can include a first stem structure that is operable to be positioned in a first bone of a joint. The first stem structure can include a first stem portion and a cage structure. The first stem portion may be operable to be positioned in the first bone. The cage structure can be formed generally between an inner sidewall and an outer surface. The stem portion can have opposing surfaces that define a disconnect formed entirely through the cage structure from the inner sidewall to the outer surface. A first bearing component can have an exterior cage opposing surface. The first bearing component can be selectively inserted into the cage structure from an insertion position to an installed position. A fastener can be threadably advanced into an engaged position with the cage structure to reduce a gap defined between the opposing surfaces of the disconnect while radially contracting the cage structure around the first bearing.

Claims (33)

1. An elbow prosthesis comprising:

a stem structure operable to be positioned in a first bone of a joint, the stem structure including:

a stem portion operable to be positioned in the first bone; and

a cage structure having an inner sidewall and an outer surface, the inner sidewall having a first groove;

a bearing component having an exterior cage opposing surface including a second groove, wherein the bearing component is selectively inserted into the cage structure from an insertion position to an assembled position wherein the first groove opposes the second groove;

a lock ring that partially nests in both of the first and second grooves; and

a radially compressible locking mechanism that moves the cage structure radially inwardly from a first location toward the bearing component into a second location.

2. The elbow prosthesis of claim 1 wherein the radially compressible locking mechanism comprises opposing surfaces on the cage structure that define a disconnect formed entirely through the cage structure from the inner sidewall to the outer surface.

3. The elbow prosthesis of claim 2 wherein the radially compressible locking mechanism further comprises a fastener that threadably advances into an engaged position with the cage structure and closes the disconnect while radially contracting the cage structure around the bearing.

4. The elbow prosthesis of claim 2 wherein at least one of the opposing surfaces of the disconnect is non-linear from the inner sidewall to the outer surface.

5. The elbow prosthesis of claim 4 wherein one of the cage structure or the bearing component includes at least one tab entry that slidably accepts at least one tab formed on the other of the cage structure or the bearing component in the assembled position.

6. The elbow prosthesis of claim 5 wherein the at least one tab and tab entry, respectively, cooperate to inhibit rotation of the bearing around the inner sidewall of the cage structure.

7. An elbow prosthesis comprising:

a stem structure operable to be positioned in a first bone of a joint, the stem structure including:

a stem portion operable to be positioned in the first bone; and

a cage structure formed generally between an inner sidewall and an outer surface, the inner sidewall having a first groove;

a bearing component having an exterior cage opposing surface including a second groove, wherein the first groove opposes the second groove; and

a lock ring that partially nests in both of the first and second grooves; and a radially compressible locking mechanism that moves the cage structure radially inwardly from a first location toward the bearing component into a second location.

8. The elbow prosthesis of claim 7 wherein the radially compressible locking mechanism comprises opposing surfaces on the cage structure that define a disconnect formed entirely through the cage structure from the inner sidewall to the outer surface.

9. The elbow prosthesis of claim 7 wherein the radially compressible locking mechanism further comprises a fastener that threadably advances into an engaged position with the cage structure and closes the disconnect while radially contracting the cage structure around the bearing.

10. The elbow prosthesis of claim 7 wherein at least one of the opposing surfaces of the disconnect is non-linear from the inner sidewall to the outer surface.

11. The elbow prosthesis of claim 10 wherein one of the cage structure or the bearing component includes at least one tab entry that slidably accepts at least one tab formed on the other of the cage structure or the bearing component in the assembled position.

12. The elbow prosthesis of claim 11 wherein the at least one tab and tab entry, respectively, cooperate to inhibit rotation of the bearing around the inner sidewall of the cage structure.

13. An elbow prosthesis comprising:

a stem structure operable to be positioned in a first bone of a joint, the stem structure including:

a stem portion operable to be positioned in the first bone;

a cage structure having an inner sidewall and an outer surface, the inner sidewall having a first groove wherein the cage structure defines a disconnect formed entirely through the cage structure from the inner sidewall to the outer surface;

a bearing component having an exterior cage opposing surface including a second groove;

a lock ring that partially nests in both of the first and second grooves; and

a fastener that threadably advances into an engaged position with the cage structure closing the disconnect and radially contracting the cage structure around the bearing.

14. The elbow prosthesis of claim 13 wherein at least one of the opposing surfaces of the disconnect is non-linear from the inner sidewall to the outer surface.

15. The elbow prosthesis of claim 14 wherein one of the cage structure or the bearing component includes at least one tab entry that slidably accepts at least one tab formed on the other of the cage structure or the first bearing component in the assembled position.

16. The elbow prosthesis of claim 15 wherein the at least one tab and tab entry, respectively, cooperate to inhibit rotation of the bearing around the inner sidewall of the cage structure.
