Abstract

Devices and methods for protecting the neurovascular structures about the vertebral column are provided. One embodiment of the invention comprises a neuroprotective stent or device adapted for placement in an intervertebral foramen of a vertebral column and configured to resist compression or impingement from surrounding structures or forces. The stent or device may further comprise a flange or hinge region to facilitate attachment of the device to the vertebrae or to facilitate insertion of the device in the foramen, respectively.

Claims (29)

1. A device for treating the spine, comprising:

a tubular body comprising a first end, a second end, an abluminal surface, a luminal surface, a lumen, a first edge, a second edge, a hinge region, and a flange extending radially from the abluminal surface along a primary axis substantially perpendicular to a longitudinal axis of the tubular body from a location along a length of the tubular body between the first end and the second end such that an interface between the flange and the tubular body forms an arch;

wherein the tubular body is adapted for positioning within an intervertebral foramen.

2. The device for treating the spine as in claim 1 , wherein the flange comprises one or more through lumens adapted for accepting a bone screw.

3. The device for treating the spine as in claim 2 , wherein the flange comprises one or more through openings adapted for accepting a bone screw.

4. The device for treating the spine as in claim 1 , wherein the tubular body comprises a material selected from the group consisting of polymers, polyetheretherketone (PEEK), polyetherketoneketone (PEKK), polyethylene, fluoropolymers, elastomers, ceramics, zirconia, alumina, silicon nitride; metal(s), titanium, titanium alloy, cobalt chromium, stainless steel, and combinations of these materials.

5. The device for treating the spine as in claim 1 , wherein the hinge region comprises at least one region of reduced wall thickness on the tubular body.

6. The device for treating the spine as in claim 5 , wherein the hinge region extends the full length of the tubular body between the first end and the second end.

7. The device for treating the spine as in claim 5 , wherein the hinge region is located around 180 degrees opposite the first edge and the second edge.

8. The device for treating the spine as in claim 1 , wherein the flange comprises a material or configuration such that the flange may at least partially conform to a bony structure to which it is attached.

9. The device for treating the spine as in claim 1 , wherein the flange is adapted to maintain the device at a desired location in the intervertebral foramen by its configuration alone, without attachment to a bony structure.

10. A device for treating the spine, comprising:

a tubular body comprising a first end, a second end, an abluminal surface, a luminal surface, a lumen adapted for accepting a nerve, a first edge, and a second edge; and

a flange comprising a first surface generally facing the first end of the tubular body, a second surface generally facing the second end of the tubular body, wherein the first and second surfaces are the largest surfaces of the flange, and at least one lumen connecting the first and second surface adapted for receiving a bone fastener;

wherein the tubular body is adapted for positioning within an intervertebral foramen; and

wherein the tubular body comprises a material selected from the group consisting of polymers, polyetheretherketone (PEEK), polyetherketoneketone (PEKK), polyethylene, fluoropolymers, elastomers, ceramics, zirconia, alumina, silicon nitride; metal(s), titanium, titanium alloy, cobalt chromium, stainless steel, and combinations of these materials.

11. The device for treating the spine as in claim 10 , wherein the tubular body further comprises a hinge region.

12. A device for treating the spine, comprising:

a tubular body comprising a first end, a second end, a first edge and a second edge defining a longitudinal opening along the tubular body and wherein the tubular body is adapted for positioning within an intervertebral foramen; and

a flame extending radially from a surface of the tubular body such that an interface between the flange and the tubular body forms an arch over a portion of a circumference of the tubular body and the flame interfaces with the tubular body at a position between and separated from the first end and the second end of the tubular body;

wherein the tubular body is configured to resist narrowing or closure of the longitudinal opening along the length of the tubular body after implantation.

13. The device for treating the spine as in claim 12 , wherein the tubular body is a stent structure.

14. The device for treating the spine as in claim 12 , wherein the tubular body is configured to resist compression forces from an intervertebral disc.

15. The device for treating the spine as in claim 12 , wherein the tubular body is configured to resist compression forces from a vertebra.

16. A device for treating the spine, comprising:

a tubular body comprising a first end, a second end, and a length between the first end and the second end, wherein the tubular body is adapted for positioning within an intervertebral foramen;

a flange arising radially from the tubular body and comprising a first surface generally facing the first end of the tubular body, a second surface generally facing the second end of the tubular body, wherein the first and second surfaces are the largest surfaces of the flange,

wherein the flange is located at a position along the length of the tubular body such that the distance between the flange and the first end is equal to a desired insertion depth of the tubular body within the intervertebral foramen and

wherein, on insertion of the tubular body to the desired insertion depth within the intervertebral foramen, the flange contacts a bony structure and maintains the device at the desired insertion depth.
