Abstract

Frames of customer traffic may be encapsulated by adding Mac-in-Mac (MiM) encapsulation fields for transportation of the frames over a portion of provider network. The MiM encapsulated traffic may be further encapsulated using VPLS by adding VPLS encapsulation fields for transportation of the frames over another portion of the provider network. The MiM encapsulations use provider network MAC addresses which enables VPLS MAC learning to occur using provider network MAC address space. MiM tunnels are mapped to VPLS service instances which are assigned pseudowire tags for transportation over the VPLS portion of provider network. The MiM header is retained when the MiM encapsulated frames are transported over the VPLS portion of the provider network. As VPLS frames exit the core network, the VPLS encapsulation fields are removed to extract the original MiM encapsulated frames for further transportation over the MiM portion of the provider network.

Claims (32)

1. An edge device for interfacing a Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) network to MAC-in-MAC (MiM) network, comprising:

an input port operable to receive a MiM-encapsulated client frame, the MiM encapsulated client frame including a client payload field containing the client frame, a destination MAC address field, a source MAC address field, a B-Tag field, and an I-Tag field;

a processor operable to determine a Virtual Private LAN Service (VPLS) service instance on the MPLS network based on the B-Tag field of the MiM-encapsulated client frame, the B-Tag field of the MiM encapsulated client frame being used to identify a MiM tunnel on the MiM network; and

an encapsulator operable to encapsulate the MiM-encapsulated client frame with VPLS encapsulation fields corresponding to the VPLS service instance to provide a VPLS-encapsulated frame for transportation on the MPLS network.

2. An edge device as defined in claim 1 , wherein the processor is operable to perform VPLS MAC learning based on contents of MAC address fields of MiM-encapsulated frames.

3. An edge device as defined in claim 1 , wherein the encapsulator is operable to add a tag corresponding to a VPLS service instance and a tag corresponding to the VPLS path to the MiM-encapsulated client frame.

4. An edge device as defined in claim 3 , wherein the tag corresponding to the VPLS path corresponds to the destination MAC address of the MiM-encapsulated frame.

5. An edge device as defined in claim 3 , wherein the tag corresponding to a VPLS service instance identifies a tunnel.

6. An edge device as defined in claim 1 , wherein the client frame is an Ethernet frame comprising an Ethernet header and client data.

7. An edge device as defined in claim 1 , further comprising:

an input port operable to receive a VPLS-encapsulated frame; and

a decapsulator operable to remove VPLS encapsulation fields of the VPLS-encapsulated frame.

8. An edge device as defined in claim 1 , further comprising:

an input port operable to receive a VPLS-encapsulated frame from the MPLS network; and

a decapsulator operable to remove VPLS encapsulation fields of the VPLS-encapsulated frame to provide an MiM-encapsulated frame to the MiM network.

9. A method of interfacing a Virtual Private LAN Service (VPLS) network to MAC-in-MAC (MiM) network, the method comprising the steps of:

receiving a MiM-encapsulated client frame;

determining a VPLS service instance on the VPLS network based on at least one field of the MiM-encapsulated client frame; and

encapsulating the MiM-encapsulated client frame with VPLS encapsulation fields corresponding to the VPLS service instance to provide a VPLS-encapsulated frame

wherein the MiM encapsulation fields comprise a source address field, a destination address field, an I-tag field, and a B-tag field; and

wherein the VPLS encapsulation fields include a tunnel tag and a pseudowire tag, a value of the tunnel tag being dependent on a value of the destination address field, and a value of the pseudowire tag being dependent on a value of the B-tag field.

10. A method as defined in claim 9 , further comprising the step of performing VPLS MAC learning based on contents of MAC address fields of MiM-encapsulated frames.

11. A method as defined in claim 9 , further comprising the step of adding a pseudowire tag corresponding to a VPLS service instance and a tunnel tag corresponding to a VPLS path to the MiM-encapsulated client frame.

12. A method as defined in claim 11 , wherein the tunnel tag corresponds to the destination MAC address of the MiM-encapsulated frame.

13. A method as defined in claim 11 , wherein the pseudowire tag corresponds to a MiM tunnel.

14. A method as defined in claim 9 , wherein the client frame is an Ethernet frame comprising an Ethernet header and client data.

15. A method as defined in claim 9 , further comprising the steps of:

receiving a VPLS-encapsulated frame; and

removing VPLS encapsulation fields of the VPLS-encapsulated frame.

16. A method as defined in claim 9 , further comprising the step of:

receiving a VPLS-encapsulated frame from the VPLS network; and

removing VPLS encapsulation fields of the VPLS-encapsulated frame to provide an MiM-encapsulated frame to the MiM network.
