Abstract

Systems and methods for deriving data from television signals received by a connected television system, the derived data being indicative of a subject related to a video segment being displayed on said screen. The systems and methods may further provide contextually targeted content to the television system, the contextually targeted content being a function of the derived data.

Claims (32)

1. A television system comprising a multi-pixel screen and a processor system, said processor system comprising a widget engine and client software for receiving pixel sampling instructions from a server and generating a request comprising a multiplicity of pixel cue points, said request being configured in accordance with said received pixel sampling instructions, each of said pixel cue points being derived by extracting a respective multiplicity of patches of pixel data from a respective frame, each of said patches comprising a two-dimensional array of sets of pixel values, and computing a respective average or weighted average of the sets of pixel values for each array.

2. The television system as recited in claim 1 , wherein said client software causes said processor system to compute the averages or weighted averages for a number of patches from a respective frame which is dictated by information contained in said received pixel sampling instructions.

3. The television system as recited in claim 1 , wherein said client software causes said processor system to extract patches of pixel data from a respective frame at locations dictated by information contained in said received pixel sampling instructions.

4. The television system as recited in claim 1 , wherein said client software causes said processor system to generate a request having a number of pixel cue points that is dictated by information contained in said received pixel sampling instructions.

5. The television system as recited in claim 1 , wherein said client software causes said processor system to extract patches of pixel data from frames at a frequency dictated by information contained in said received pixel sampling instructions.

6. The television system as recited in claim 1 , wherein said client software causes said processor system to extract patches of pixel data having horizontal and vertical dimensions dictated by information contained in said received pixel sampling instructions.

7. The television system as recited in claim 1 , wherein said client software requests pixel sampling instructions from the server periodically.

8. A method for displaying contextually targeted content on a screen of a television system that is connected to a remote server system via the Internet, comprising the following steps performed by a processor system of the television system:

(a) receiving pixel sampling instructions from the remote server system via the Internet connection;

(b) receiving television signals comprising video data and audio data of a video segment;

(c) displaying successive frames of said video segment on a multi-pixel screen of the television system based on said video data;

(d) generating a client request to a remote server system comprising a television system identifier, a time stamp, and a multiplicity of pixel cue points, said pixel cue points being configured in accordance with said received pixel sampling instructions, each of said pixel cue points being generated by extracting a respective multiplicity of patches of pixel data from a respective frame of said video segment, each of said patches comprising a two-dimensional array of sets of pixel values, and calculating a respective mathematical transformation of the sets of pixel values for each array;

(e) transmitting said client request to the remote server system via the Internet connection;

(f) receiving content data from the remote server system via the Internet connection after said client request has been transmitted, said content data representing content associated with content in said successive frames of said video segment being displayed on said screen;

(g) displaying a window on the screen, said window overlying a portion of the image from said video segment being displayed on the screen; and

(h) displaying said content data on said window while additional frames of said video segments are being displayed on said screen.

9. The method as recited in claim 8 , wherein step (d) comprises calculating a mathematical transformation for a number of patches from a respective frame which is dictated by information contained in said received pixel sampling instructions.

10. The method as recited in claim 8 , wherein step (d) comprises extracting patches of pixel data from a respective frame at locations dictated by information contained in said received pixel sampling instructions.

11. The method as recited in claim 8 , wherein step (d) comprises extracting patches of pixel data from frames at a frequency dictated by information contained in said received pixel sampling instructions.

12. The method as recited in claim 8 , wherein the processor system of the television system periodically sends requests for pixel sampling instructions to the remote server system via the Internet connection.

13. The method as recited in claim 8 , further comprising deriving a key word or phrase from said audio data and transmitting said key word or phrase to the remote server system.

14. The method as recited in claim 8 , wherein said content data displayed on said window comprises multiple selectable content options for selecting further content to be received from the remote server system and displayed on said window.

15. A television system comprising a multi-pixel screen and a processor system, said processor system comprising an engine and client software for executing the following operations:

(a) receiving pixel sampling instructions from a remote server system via an Internet connection;

(b) generating a client request to a remote server system comprising a television system identifier, a time stamp, and a multiplicity of pixel cue points, said pixel cue points being configured in accordance with said received pixel sampling instructions, each of said pixel cue points being generated by extracting a respective multiplicity of patches of pixel data from a respective frame of said video segment, each of said patches comprising a two-dimensional array of sets of pixel values, and calculating a respective mathematical transformation of the sets of pixel values for each array; and

(c) transmitting said client request to the remote server system via the Internet connection.

16. The television system as recited in claim 15 , wherein said client software causes said processor system to calculate a mathematical transformation for a number of patches from a respective frame which is dictated by information contained in said received pixel sampling instructions.

17. The television system as recited in claim 15 , wherein said client software causes said processor system to extract patches of pixel data from a respective frame at locations dictated by information contained in said received pixel sampling instructions.

18. The television system as recited in claim 15 , wherein said client software causes said processor system to generate a request having a number of pixel cue points that is dictated by information contained in said received pixel sampling instructions.

19. The television system as recited in claim 15 , wherein said client software causes said processor system to extract patches of pixel data from frames at a frequency dictated by information contained in said received pixel sampling instructions.

20. The television system as recited in claim 15 , wherein said client software causes said processor system to extract patches of pixel data having horizontal and vertical dimensions dictated by information contained in said received pixel sampling instructions.

21. The television system as recited in claim 15 , wherein said client software requests pixel sampling instructions from the remote server system periodically.
