Abstract

An implantable device has a body that is substantially rigid and has an imageable shape. The body is further bioabsorbable and may contain permanent metallic elements to aid in its imaging. When the device is implanted in a resected cavity in soft tissue, it can cause the cavity to conform substantially to a known imageable shape. The implantable device is further imageable due to its attenuation properties being different from those of soft tissue such that the boundaries of the tissue corresponding to the predetermined shape can be determined.

Claims (25)

1. A device for targeting external beam radiation to a region of tissue surrounding a lumpectomy cavity comprising:

an implant body, the implant body being formed of a bioabsorbable polymer, and comprising

a periphery; and

a plurality of radiopaque markers attached to the implant body about the periphery to define orthogonal x, y, and z axes of the implant body, the orthogonal x, y, and z axes having an axial length between the plurality of radiopaque markers,

wherein the implant body includes spaced apart elements that define an open architecture that permits partial encapsulation of the cavity wall around the elements upon initial placement of the implant body within the cavity while the radiopaque markers remain in position for targeting the region of tissue surrounding the lumpectomy cavity,

and wherein the x, y, and z axes comprise a range of axial lengths so that the implant body can be sized to fit an irregular surgical cavity.

2. The device of claim 1 , wherein the radiopaque markers comprise metallic clips.

3. The device of claim 1 , wherein the bioabsorbable polymer has an absorption time of at least 2 weeks.

4. The device of claim 3 , wherein the bioabsorbable polymer has an absorption time of at least 6 months.

5. The device of claim 1 , wherein the bioabsorbable polymer is thermoplastic.

6. The device of claim 1 , further comprising one or more protrusions for bluntly penetrating into surrounding tissue.

7. The device of claim 1 , wherein the radiopaque markers allow visualization by radiography.

8. The device of claim 7 , wherein the radiography includes mega-voltage x-rays.

9. The device of claim 7 , wherein the radiography includes kilo-voltage x-rays.

10. The device of claim 7 , wherein the radiography includes fluoroscopy.

11. A device for targeting external beam radiation to regions of target tissue surrounding a tumor resection cavity comprising:

an implant body, the implant body having an open architecture and being formed of a bioabsorbable material, and comprising a periphery; and

a plurality of radiopaque markers attached to the implant body about the periphery to define orthogonal x, y, and z axes of the implant body, the orthogonal x, y, and z axes having an axial length between the plurality of radiopaque markers,

wherein the open architecture implant body supports a wall of the cavity yet also permits partial encapsulation of the cavity wall around the body upon initial placement of the body within the cavity, and

wherein the x, y, and z axes comprise a range of axial lengths so that the implant body can be sized to fit an irregular surgical cavity.

12. The device of claim 11 , wherein the radiopaque markers comprise surgical clips.

13. The device of claim 11 , wherein the bioabsorbable material is a thermoplastic polymer.

14. The device of claim 11 , further comprising one or more protrusions for bluntly penetrating into surrounding tissue.

15. The device of claim 11 , wherein the bioabsorbable material has an absorption time of at least 2 weeks.

16. The device of claim 15 , wherein the bioabsorbable material has an absorption time of at least 6 months.
