Abstract

A surgical access device includes a seal housing and a roller disposed in the housing and defining a working channel. The roller may be stationary or moveable within the seal housing to form both a zero seal in the absence of an instrument, and an instrument seal in the presence of an instrument. Rotation of the roller is contemplated and low-friction surfaces are discussed to reduce instrument insertion forces. Multiple rollers, wiper elements, low-friction braid, pivoting elements and idler rollers are contemplated. The rollers will typically be formed of a gel material in order to facilitate the desired compliance, stretchability and elongation desired.

Claims (48)

1. A surgical access device comprising a surgical valve comprising:

a longitudinal axis extending from a proximal end to a distal end;

a seal housing;

a working channel extending longitudinally through the seal housing;

a first axle disposed in the seal housing, spaced from the working channel; and

a first, toroidal roller mounted on the axle,

a wiper extending inwardly from the seal housing and contacting the first toroidal roller;

wherein

the first toroidal roller comprises a gel material,

in the absence of an instrument in the working channel, the gel material of the first toroidal roller defines a zero seal in the working channel, and

in the presence of an instrument in the working channel, the gel material of the first toroidal roller defines an instrument seal.

2. The surgical access device of claim 1 , wherein a transverse cross section of the seal housing is circular.

3. The surgical access device of claim 2 , wherein the seal housing comprises a conical portion.

4. The surgical access device of claim 2 , wherein the seal housing comprises a cylindrical portion.

5. The surgical access device of claim 1 , wherein the first axle is fixed to the seal housing.

6. The surgical access device of claim 1 , wherein the seal housing further comprises recesses in which the first axle is disposed.

7. The surgical access device of claim 6 , wherein the recesses are oblong.

8. The surgical access device of claim 1 , wherein the first axle is toroidal.

9. The surgical access device of claim 1 , further comprising a second toroidal roller, wherein the working channel extends between the first toroidal roller and the second toroidal roller.

10. The surgical access device of claim 9 , further comprising a second axle, on which the second toroidal roller is mounted.

11. The surgical access device of claim 9 , wherein the first axle comprises a torus and the second toroidal roller is mounted on the first axle.

12. The surgical access device of claim 1 , wherein the gel material of the first toroidal roller comprises at least one void.

13. The surgical access device of claim 1 , wherein the first toroidal roller contacts the seal housing, defining a housing seal.

14. The surgical access device of claim 1 , further comprising a cannula extending distally from the seal housing.

15. A surgical access device comprising a surgical valve comprising:

a longitudinal axis extending from a proximal end to a distal end;

a seal housing;

a working channel extending longitudinally through the seal housing;

a first axle disposed in the seal housing, spaced from the working channel; and

a first, toroidal roller mounted on the axle;

an idler roller contacting the first toroidal roller and the seal housing, thereby defining a housing seal;

wherein

the first toroidal roller comprises a gel material,

in the absence of an instrument in the working channel, the gel material of the first toroidal roller defines a zero seal in the working channel, and

in the presence of an instrument in the working channel, the gel material of the first toroidal roller defines an instrument seal.

16. The surgical access device of claim 15 , wherein a transverse cross section of the seal housing is circular.

17. The surgical access device of claim 16 , wherein the seal housing comprises a conical portion.

18. The surgical access device of claim 16 , wherein the seal housing comprises a cylindrical portion.

19. The surgical access device of claim 15 , wherein the first axle is fixed to the seal housing.

20. The surgical access device of claim 15 , wherein the seal housing further comprises recesses in which the first axle is disposed.

21. The surgical access device of claim 20 , wherein the recesses are oblong.

22. The surgical access device of claim 15 , wherein the first axle is toroidal.

23. The surgical access device of claim 15 , further comprising a second toroidal roller, wherein the working channel extends between the first toroidal roller and the second toroidal roller.

24. The surgical access device of claim 23 , further comprising a second axle, on which the second toroidal roller is mounted.

25. The surgical access device of claim 23 , wherein the first axle comprises a torus and the second toroidal roller is mounted on the first axle.

26. The surgical access device of claim 15 , wherein the gel material of the first toroidal roller comprises at least one void.

27. The surgical access device of claim 15 , wherein the first toroidal roller contacts the seal housing, defining a housing seal.

28. The surgical access device of claim 15 , further comprising a cannula extending distally from the seal housing.
