Abstract

A theft deterrent product may be provided. First, a plurality of unique codes may be created. Then a plurality of indicia may be placed periodically and longitudinally on the product. The plurality of indicia may respectively correspond to the plurality of unique codes. The product may have an outer layer and into an portion. Placing the plurality of indicia may comprise etching through the outer layer and into the inner portion. In a database, the plurality of unique codes may be assigned to an organizational entity. The organizational entity may comprise a first enterprise.

Claims (26)

1. A theft deterrent cable system, comprising:

at least one indicia placed periodically and longitudinally on a cable, the at least one indicia corresponding to a unique code configured to indicate ownership by an entity of the theft deterrent cable system, the unique code having a unique portion that is unique to a section of the theft deterrent cable on which the at least one indicia is disposed, the unique portion not being repeated in the section of the theft deterrent cable on which the at least one indicia is disposed, not being repeated for any other section of the theft deterrent cable, and not being repeated for any other cables, wherein the at least one indicia is not visible from an exterior of the cable; and

an indicator on the exterior of the cable.

2. The cable of claim 1 , wherein the cable comprises a plurality of layers.

3. The cable of claim 2 , wherein a first one of the plurality of layers comprises the exterior of the cable.

4. The cable of claim 3 , wherein the at least one indicia is placed on a second one of the plurality of layers.

5. The cable of claim 1 , wherein the indicator comprises a logo that is visible at a distance from the cable.

6. The cable of claim 5 , wherein the logo is placed on a jacket.

7. The cable of claim 1 , wherein the indicator comprises an insignia that is visible at a distance from the cable.

8. The cable of claim 7 , wherein the insignia is placed on a jacket.

9. The cable of claim 1 , wherein the at least one indicia is tamper proof.

10. The cable of claim 1 , wherein the at least one indicia is laser etched.

11. The cable of claim 1 , wherein the at least one indicia is chemically etched.

12. The cable of claim 1 , wherein the at least one indicia is placed on the cable via ink.

13. The cable of claim 1 , wherein the at least one indicia is placed on the cable via a high speed indexing printing wheel.

14. The cable of claim 1 , wherein the unique code is encrypted in the at least one indicia.

15. The cable of claim 1 , wherein the at least one indicia includes a sequential number portion corresponding to a sequential number that is incremented by an amount equal to a predetermined distance along the cable.

16. The cable of claim 1 , wherein the exterior of the cable comprises a jacket.

17. The cable of claim 16 , wherein the cable comprises at least one solid conductor.

18. The cable of claim 17 , wherein the cable comprises a layer between the jacket and the at least one solid conductor.

19. The cable of claim 18 , wherein the at least one indicia is placed on the layer.

20. The cable of claim 18 , wherein the layer is adjacent the jacket.

21. The cable of claim 16 , wherein the cable comprises at least one stranded conductor.

22. The cable of claim 21 , wherein the cable comprises a layer between the jacket and the at least one stranded conductor.

23. The cable of claim 22 , wherein the at least one indicia is placed on the layer.

24. The cable of claim 22 , wherein the layer is adjacent the jacket.
