Abstract

A space-saving in-flight trash compactor, comprising a trash chute, a compactor mechanism, and a storage chamber that includes an interface for the trash chute. Trash deposited in the trash chute is channeled into the storage chamber. Either or both of the compactor mechanism and the storage chamber are rotatably attached to one or two axles. During maintenance or trash removal, the compactor mechanism or storage chamber may swivel around an axle to permit ease of access.

Claims (22)

1. A space-saving in-flight trash compacting system positioned within a dead space in an aircraft galley, the compacting system comprising:

a trash chute positioned adjacent to a workdeck of the galley;

a compactor mechanism; and

a storage chamber comprising a chute interface adapted to channel trash disposed through the trash chute into the storage chamber for compaction by the compactor mechanism, the storage chamber positioned below the compactor mechanism, and the storage chamber rotatably attached to a chamber axle such that the storage chamber rotates from an operating position in which compaction is in the dead space inaccessible from in front of the galley to a maintenance position in which compacted trash is removable from the storage chamber accessible from in front of the galley.

2. The space-saving in-flight trash compacting system of claim 1 , further comprising:

a compactor axle secured in a position above the chamber axle,

wherein the compactor mechanism is rotatably attached to the compactor axle.

3. The space-saving in-flight trash compacting system of claim 1 , further comprising:

at least two rotatable supports secured to the storage chamber.

4. The space-saving in-flight trash compacting system of claim 1 , further comprising:

at least one latch attached to the storage chamber, wherein the latch secures the storage chamber at least during operation of the compactor mechanism.

5. The space-saving in-flight trash compacting system of claim 1 , further comprising:

a remote control for initiating a compaction cycle.

6. The space-saving in-flight trash compacting system of claim 1 , wherein the trash chute further comprises a chute flap.

7. The space-saving in-flight trash compacting system of claim 1 , wherein the trash chute comprises a side-loading flap.

8. A space-saving in-flight trash compacting system positioned within a dead space in an aircraft galley, the compacting system comprising:

a means for compacting trash;

a means for channeling trash positioned adjacent to a workdeck of the galley; and

a storage chamber adapted to receive trash from the means for channeling and to mate with the means for compacting trash during compaction,

wherein the storage chamber is rotatably attached to a chamber axle such that the storage chamber rotates from an operating position in which compaction is performed in the dead space inaccessible from in front of the galley to a maintenance position in which compacted trash is removable from the storage chamber accessible from in front of the galley.

9. The space-saving in-flight trash compacting system of claim 8 , wherein the means for channeling comprises a loading end disposed at a level above the means for compacting trash.

10. The space-saving in-flight trash compacting system of claim 8 , wherein the means for channeling comprises a loading end disposed at a level below the means for compacting trash.
