SYSTEMS AND TECHNIQUES FOR INTRAVERTEBRAL SPINAL STABILIZATION WITH EXPANDABLE DEVICES
Expandable devices include a body defining a hollow interior for receiving distal portion of a delivery instrument. The expandable devices are collapsed on the distal portion of the delivery instrument for delivery to the operative site within a vertebral body. Upon delivery of the collapsed expandable devices to the operative site, the distal portion of the delivery instrument is enlargeable to expand the expandable device in situ for implantation at the operative site.

68 . An intravertebral treatment device comprising:
a first portion configured for engagement with a vertebra toward a first endplate of the vertebra;
a second portion configured for engagement with the vertebra toward a second endplate of the vertebra; and
a linkage connecting the first portion and the second portion, the linkage being configured to facilitate relative movement of the first portion and the second portion between a collapsed configuration and an expanded configuration.
69 . The intravertebral treatment device according to claim 68 , further comprising a detachable shaft disposed with the linkage in a configuration to facilitate relative movement of the first portion and the second portion between the collapsed configuration and the expanded configuration.
70 . The intravertebral treatment device according to claim 68 , wherein the linkage includes a proximal portion and a distal portion, the proximal portion and the distal portion being configured to move toward one another as the first portion and the second portion move to the expanded configuration.
71 . The intravertebral treatment device according to claim 68 , further comprising a shaft coupled with the linkage in a configuration to facilitate relative movement of the first portion and the second portion between the collapsed configuration and the expanded configuration.
72 . The intravertebral treatment device according to claim 68 , wherein the linkage includes a first pivoting linkage and a second pivoting linkage, the first and second linkages being connected to the first portion and the first and second linkages being connected to the second portion.
73 . The intravertebral treatment device according to claim 72 , wherein the first pivoting linkage includes a first pivot point and the second pivoting linkage includes a second pivot point, the first pivot point and the second pivot point being drawn together to move the first portion and the second portion to the expanded configuration.
74 . The intravertebral treatment device according to claim 73 , further comprising a shaft coupled to the first pivoting linkage and the second pivoting linkage, wherein the first pivot point and the second pivot point are drawn together by rotation of the shaft.
75 . The intravertebral treatment device according to claim 68 , wherein the first portion and the second portion are selectively movable via the linkage to a plurality of fixed orientations between the collapsed configuration and the expanded configuration.
76 . The intravertebral treatment device according to claim 68 , wherein the first portion and the second portion are substantially flat.
77 . The intravertebral treatment device according to claim 68 , wherein the first portion and the second portion define a cavity therebetween configured for disposal of a filler material.
78 . An intravertebral treatment device comprising:
a body including a first portion and a second portion, the first portion defining an engagement surface configured for engagement with a vertebra toward a first endplate of the vertebra, the second portion defining an engagement surface configured for engagement with the vertebra toward a second endplate of the vertebra, the first portion and the second portion defining a cavity therebetween configured for disposal of a filler material;
a linkage connecting the first portion and the second portion; and
a shaft coupled with the linkage in a configuration to facilitate relative movement of the first portion and the second portion between the collapsed configuration and the expanded configuration in an orientation to provide reduction and stabilization of the vertebra.
79 . An intravertebral treatment device according to claim 78 , wherein the linkage includes a proximal portion and a distal portion, the proximal portion and the distal portion being configured to move toward one another as the first portion and the second portion move to the expanded configuration.
80 . The intravertebral treatment device according to claim 78 , wherein the linkage includes a first pivoting linkage and a second pivoting linkage, the first and second linkages being connected to the first portion and the first and second linkages being connected to the second portion.
81 . The intravertebral treatment device according to claim 80 , wherein the first pivoting linkage includes a first pivot point and the second pivoting linkage includes a second pivot point, the first pivot point and the second pivot point being drawn together to move the first portion and the second portion to the expanded configuration.
82 . The intravertebral treatment device according to claim 81 , wherein the first pivot point and the second pivot point are drawn together by rotation of the shaft.
83 . The intravertebral treatment device according to claim 82 , wherein the first pivot joint and the second pivot joint are moved apart to move the first portion and the second portion toward one another,
wherein the first pivot joint and the second pivot joint are drawn together by rotation of the shaft in a first direction, and
wherein the first pivot joint and the second pivot joint are moved apart by rotation of the shaft in a second direction opposite to the first direction.
84 . The intravertebral treatment device according to claim 78 , further comprising a bone filler material disposed between the first portion and the second portion.
85 . A method for treating a vertebral body, the method comprising:
providing an expandable device comprising a first reduction member, a second reduction member, a linkage coupled between the first reduction member and the second reduction member, and a shaft coupled to the linkage;
placing the expandable device into the vertebral body;
rotating the shaft to cause the linkage to move the first reduction member and the second reduction member away from one another.
86 . The method of claim 85 , wherein moving the first reduction member and the second reduction member away from one another reduces the vertebral body.
87 . The method of claim 85 , wherein moving the first reduction member and the second reduction member away from one another creates a cavity in the vertebral body,
the method further comprising placing a filler material in the cavity.
