Abstract

A system and process for customizing the performance of an xDSL communication system in which a transmitting modem and/or a receiving modem will negotiate a performance parameter for adjustment.

Claims (19)

1. A digital subscriber line (DSL) modem, comprising:

means for receiving a signal transmitted by a second DSL modem, the signal transmitted at a defined transmission data rate and at an initial signal transmission power;

means for determining a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the received signal;

means for negotiating, with the second DSL modem, a reduction of the signal transmission power at the defined transmission data rate based upon the determined SNR and a minimum acceptable SNR; and

means for receiving a second signal transmitted by the second DSL modem at the defined transmission data rate and at the reduced signal transmission power.

2. The DSL modem of claim 1 , further comprising means for identifying the minimum acceptable SNR of the received signal at the defined transmission data rate.

3. The DSL modem of claim 1 , wherein the means for negotiating the reduction of the signal transmission power requests an adjustment of the signal transmission power to a specific transmission power value.

4. The DSL modem of claim 1 , wherein the means for negotiating the reduction of the signal transmission power negotiates the reduction of the signal transmission power when the determined SNR exceeds the minimum acceptable SNR by a specified margin.

5. The DSL modem of claim 4 , further comprising means for negotiating, with the second DSL modem, an increase of the signal transmission power at the defined transmission data rate when the determined SNR falls below the minimum acceptable SNR.

6. The DSL modem of claim 5 , wherein the means for negotiating the increase of the signal transmission power requests an adjustment of the signal transmission power by a predetermined increment.

7. The DSL modem of claim 5 , wherein the means for negotiating the increase of the signal transmission power negotiates the increase of the signal transmission power when the determined SNR falls below the minimum acceptable SNR by a specified margin.

8. The DSL modem of claim 1 , wherein the reduction of the signal transmission power at the defined transmission data rate allows for an increase in error rate.

9. A method performed by a digital subscriber line (DSL) modem, comprising:

transmitting a first signal to a second DSL modem at a transmission data rate and at an initial signal transmission power;

negotiating, with the second DSL modem, a reduction of the signal transmission power at the transmission data rate when a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the transmitted signal exceeds a minimum acceptable SNR corresponding to the transmission data rate by a specified margin; and

transmitting a second signal to the second DSL modem at the transmission data rate and at the reduced signal transmission power.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein negotiating the reduction of the signal transmission power includes receiving a request to adjust the signal transmission power by a predetermined increment.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein adjustment by the predetermined increment comprises dropping down to the next lower value in a table of predetermined transmit power levels.

12. The method of claim 9 , further comprising negotiating, with the second DSL modem, an increase of the signal transmission power at the transmission data rate when a SNR of the second transmitted signal falls below the minimum acceptable SNR.
