Abstract

A system for delivering more than one optical power form and at least one control signal over an optical conduit includes control circuitry for controlling characteristics of the optical power system.

Claims (39)

1. An optical power system, comprising:

at least one optical power source providing at least two different optical power forms;

a first optical coupler configured to provide a first optical power form, a second optical power form, and a first optical control form to a common output of the first optical coupler;

a second optical coupler configured to:

receive the first optical power form, the second optical power form, and the first optical control signal through a common input and to divide the first optical power form, the second optical power form, and the first optical control signal between a first output, a second output, and a third output of the second optical coupler;

a control signal receiver configured to receive the first optical control signal from the second optical coupler and to provide the first optical control signal;

a first optical power receiver configured to:

receive at least the first optical power form from the second optical coupler and receive the first optical control signal from the control signal receiver; and

convert the first optical power form to electrical power of at least a first electrical power form having characteristics including at least one of frequency information, polarity information, and phase information based on the first optical control signal; and

an optical conduit coupled to the first optical coupler and the second optical coupler and configured to transmit at least the first optical power form, the second optical power form, and the first optical control signal there between.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the first optical power form and the first optical control form differ in mode structure.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the first optical power form and the first optical control form differ in wavelength.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the first optical power form and the first optical control form differ in polarization.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the first optical power form and the first optical control form differ in optical bandwidth.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the first optical power source includes at least one electrically-powered light source.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the first optical power source includes at least one laser.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the first optical power source includes at least one semiconductor laser.

9. The system of claim 1 , wherein the first optical power source includes at least one fiber laser.

10. The system of claim 1 , wherein the first optical power source includes at least one solid-state laser.

11. The system of claim 1 , wherein the first optical power source includes a control element configured to control the optical output in response to the first optical control signal.

12. The system of claim 1 , wherein the first optical receiver includes a control circuit configured to control the operation of at least one optical power converter based on the first optical control signal.

13. The system of claim 1 , wherein the first optical coupler includes at least one of a wavelength division multiplexer (WDM), a polarization combiner, or a mode combiner.

14. The system of claim 1 , wherein the first output power form and the first optical control form differ in frequency.

15. The system of claim 1 , wherein the first output power form and the first optical control form differ in polarity.

16. The system of claim 1 , wherein the first output power form and the first optical control form differ in phase.

17. The system of claim 1 , wherein the optical conduit includes an optical fiber.

18. The system of claim 1 , wherein the optical conduit includes a photonic crystal fiber.

19. The system of claim 1 , wherein the optical conduit includes a holey fiber.

20. The system of claim 1 , wherein the first optical control signal is configured to affect operation of at least one of a switching device coupled to the second optical coupler or an optical power receiver coupled to the second optical coupler.

21. The system of claim 1 , wherein the first optical control signal is configured to determine the output of at least one optical power receiver coupled to the second optical coupler.

22. The system of claim 1 , wherein at least one characteristic of one of the optical power sources is adjusted based on at least one characteristic of the optical conduit.

23. The system of claim 1 , wherein at least one characteristic of one of the optical power sources is adjusted based on at least one characteristic of the optical conduit and the at least one characteristic of the optical power sources includes at least one of wavelength, power, or polarization.

24. The system of claim 1 , wherein at least one characteristic of one of the optical power sources is adjusted based on at least one characteristic of the optical conduit and the at least one characteristic of the optical conduit includes at least one of transmission efficiency or maximum power handling capability.

25. The system of claim 1 , wherein at least one characteristic of one of the optical power sources is adjusted based on at least one characteristic of a load coupled to at least the first optical power receiver.

The system of claim 1 , wherein at least one characteristic of one of the optical power sources is adjusted based on at least one characteristic of a load coupled to at least one the first optical power receiver and the at least one characteristic of the load is sensed by a sensor configured to sense the at least one characteristic of the load.

The system of claim 1 , wherein the first optical control signal is determined by a control circuit and the control circuit uses an algorithm, the algorithm including at least one of classical control, linear control, nonlinear control, adaptive control, multivariable control, optimal control, intelligent control, fuzzy control, neural control, stochastic control, or look up table control.

28. The system of claim 1 ,

wherein the first optical power receiver and the second optical power coupler are part of a single receiving unit.

29. The system of claim 1 , wherein the first control signal controls the frequency of at least one of the first optical power form or the second optical power form.
