Abstract

A composite metal ingot having two or more lengthwise alloy layers including adjacent first and second layers respectively formed of an aluminum-manganese alloy and an aluminum alloy of a different composition wherein the interface between the first and second layers is in the form of a substantially continuous metallurgical bond characterized by the presence of particles of one or more intermetallic compositions containing manganese from the first layer dispersed within a region of the second layer adjacent the interface, the first and second layers having been formed by applying the alloy for the second layer to a self-supporting surface of the first layer while the self-supporting surface is at a temperature between the solidus and liquidus temperatures of the first layer alloy.

Claims (11)

1. A composite metal as-cast ingot comprising a plurality of substantially parallel lengthwise alloy layers, including a first alloy layer adjacent to a second alloy layer, said first alloy layer being formed of an aluminum-manganese alloy and second alloy layer being formed of an aluminum alloy of a different composition, wherein the interface between said first alloy layer and said second alloy layer is in the form of a substantially continuous metallurgical bond characterized by the presence of particles of one or more intermetallic compositions of aluminum and manganese dispersed or exuded from the first alloy layer into a region, adjacent to the interface, of the second alloy layer, said first and second alloy layers having been formed by applying said aluminum alloy for said second alloy layer in a molten state to a self-supporting surface of the first alloy layer while the self-supporting surface of the first alloy layer is at a temperature between the solidus and liquidus temperatures of the alloy of said first alloy layer.

2. A composite metal as-cast ingot according to claim 1 further characterized by the presence of plumes or exudates of one or more intermetallic compositions of aluminum and manganese from the first alloy layer extending from the interface into the second alloy layer.

3. A composite metal as-cast ingot according to claim 1 , wherein the cross section of the ingot is rectangular and said ingot consists of a core layer and at least one cladding layer adjacent to said core layer on at least one long side of the rectangular ingot, said core layer and the cladding layer, or one of said cladding layers when there is more than one, forming said first and second adjacent alloy layers.

4. A composite metal as-cast ingot according to claim 1 , wherein the aluminum alloy of the second alloy layer is an aluminum-silicon alloy.

5. A composite sheet product produced by hot and cold rolling a composite metal as-cast ingot as claimed in claim 4 .

6. A composite sheet product according to claim 5 wherein the sheet product comprises a brazing sheet.

7. A composite metal as-cast ingot according to claim 1 , comprising a third alloy layer adjacent to said first alloy layer having an aluminum alloy composition different from said first alloy layer, wherein said third alloy layer and said first alloy layer form a second interface within said ingot in the form of a substantially continuous metallurgical bond characterized by the presence of particles of one or more intermetallic compositions of aluminum and manganese dispersed or exuded from said first alloy layer into a region, adjacent to the second interface, of the third alloy layer, said first and third alloy layers having been formed by applying said aluminum alloy for said third alloy layer in a molten state to a self-supporting surface of the first alloy layer while the self-supporting surface of the first alloy layer is at a temperature between the solidus and liquidus temperatures of the alloy of said first alloy layer.

8. A cast ingot product consisting of an elongated ingot comprising, in cross-section, a plurality of lengthwise alloy layers, including a first alloy layer adjacent to a second alloy layer, said first alloy layer being formed of an aluminum-manganese alloy and said second alloy layer being formed of an aluminum alloy of a different composition, wherein the interface between said first alloy layer and said second alloy layer is in the form of a substantially continuous metallurgical bond characterized by the presence of particles of one or more intermetallic compositions of aluminum and manganese dispersed or exuded from the first alloy layer into a region, adjacent the interface, of the second alloy layer, said first and second alloy layers having been formed by applying said aluminum alloy for said second alloy layer in a molten state to a self-supporting surface of the first alloy layer while the self-supporting surface of the first alloy layer is at a temperature between the solidus and liquidus temperatures of the alloy of said first alloy layer.

9. A cast ingot product according to claim 8 further characterized by the presence of plumes or exudates of one or more intermetallic compositions of aluminum and manganese from the first alloy layer extending from the interface into a region of the second alloy layer.

10. A cast product according to claim 8 further characterized by the presence in the cast product of a layer, adjacent to the interface, within the first alloy layer having a reduced quantity of intermetallic particles of one or more intermetallic compositions of aluminum and manganese compared to a remainder of said first alloy layer.

11. A cast ingot product according to claim 10 wherein the layer having a reduced quantity of intermetallic particles of one or more intermetallic compositions of aluminum and manganese is between 4 and 8 mm in thickness.
