Abstract

In a cavity-dumped, repetitively-pulsed, solid-state laser cavity dumping is protracted over a predetermined time longer than a round-trip time of the resonator of the laser. The cavity dumping is effected by a Pockels cell optical switch. During a dumping period a voltage applied to the Pockels cell falls in a predetermined time. Varying the voltage fall-time varies the duration of pulses provided by the laser, independent of the pulse-repetition frequency.

Claims (21)

1. A method of generating pulses from a cavity dumped laser of the type having a gain medium and a controllable element for selectively rotating the polarization state of the radiation circulating in the cavity from a first state wherein a majority of the radiation is permitted to circulate in the resonant cavity and a second state wherein the majority of the circulating radiation is dumped from the resonant cavity via a polarizing element to create an output pulse, said method comprising the steps of:

operating the element in the first state for a first time period allowing the level of intracavity radiation to increase; and

switching the element from the first state to the second state in order to generate an output pulse, wherein the switching period between the first and the second state is at least twice as long as the round trip time in the cavity.

2. A method as recited in claim 1 , wherein the switching period between the first and the second state is at least four times as long as the round trip time in the cavity.

3. A method as recited in claim 1 , wherein the length of the switching period is selected based upon a desired pulse duration.

4. A method as recited claim 1 , further including the step of switching the element from the second state back to the first state.

5. A method as recited in claim 4 , wherein the time period for switching the element from the second state back to the first state is less than the round trip time of the resonator.

6. An improved cavity dumped laser of the type having a gain medium and a controllable element for selectively rotating the polarization state of the radiation circulating in the cavity from a first state wherein a majority of the radiation is permitted to circulate in the resonant cavity allowing the level of intracavity radiation to increase and a second state wherein the majority of the circulating radiation is dumped from the resonant cavity via a polarizing element to create an output pulse, said improvement comprising:

a controller for variably controlling the time in which the element switches from the first state to the second state in order to achieve a predetermined pulse duration and wherein the switching period between the first and the second state is at least twice as long as the round trip time in the cavity.

7. A laser as recited in claim 6 , wherein said controller also functions to variably control the rate at which the element switches from the first state to the second state in order to achieve a predetermined pulse shape.

8. A laser as recited in claim 6 , wherein the switching period between the first and the second state is at least four times as long as the round trip time in the cavity.

9. A laser as recited claim 6 , wherein the controller further operates to cause the element to switch from the second state back to the first state.

10. A method as recited in claim 9 , wherein the time period for switching the element from the second state back to the first state is less than the round trip time of the resonator.

(a) operating the element in the first state for a first time period allowing the level of intracavity radiation to increase;

(b) switching the element from the first state to the second state in order to generate an output pulse, wherein the switching period between the first and the second state is at least twice as long as the round trip time in the cavity;

(c) switching the element from the second state back to the first state; and

(d) repeating steps (a), (b) and (c) a plurality of times in order to generate a plurality of cavity dumped output pulses.

12. A method as recited in claim 11 , wherein the switching period between the first and the second state is at least four times as long as the round trip time in the cavity.

13. A method as recited in claim 11 , wherein the length of the switching period is selected based upon a desired pulse duration.

14. A method as recited in claim 11 , wherein the time period for switching the element from the second state back to the first state is less than the round trip time of the resonator.
