Abstract

A projection apparatus for producing color images having reduced speckle artifacts comprising: at least three narrow band light sources having first, second and third visible wavelength bands; a digital image source providing color digital image data; at least one spatial light modulator for forming a color image using light responsive to the color digital image data; a projection display surface including a reflective layer that reflects incident illumination in the first, second, and third wavelength bands; and a fluorescent agent that absorbs a fraction of the incident light in the first visible wavelength bands and emits light in a corresponding first emissive visible wavelength band; and a projection lens that projects the color image onto the projection display surface; wherein return light from the projection display surface contains light in both the first incident visible wavelength band and the first emissive visible wavelength band, thereby reducing speckle artifacts.

Claims (42)

1. A projection apparatus for producing color images having reduced speckle artifacts comprising:

a) at least three narrow band light sources having first, second and third visible wavelength bands, respectively, wherein each visible wavelength band has an associated peak wavelength and an associated bandwidth;

b) a digital image source providing color digital image data;

c) at least one spatial light modulator for forming a color image using light from the at least three narrow band light sources responsive to the color digital image data;

d) a projection display surface including:

i) a reflective layer that reflects incident illumination in the first, second, and third wavelength bands; and

ii) a fluorescent agent that absorbs a fraction of the incident light in the first visible wavelength bands and emits light in a corresponding first emissive visible wavelength band having a first emissive peak wavelength and a first emissive bandwidth, wherein the fraction of the light in the incident visible wavelength band that is absorbed by the fluorescent agent is between 2% and 40%, and wherein the majority of the remaining fraction of the light in the incident visible wavelength band is reflected by the substrate; and

e) projection optics that project the color image onto the projection display surface;

wherein return light from the projection display surface produced when incident light in the first incident visible wavelength band is incident on the projection display surface contains both reflected light in the first incident visible wavelength band was not absorbed by the fluorescent agent and was reflected from the substrate and light in the first emissive visible wavelength band that was emitted by the fluorescent agent, the reflected light in the incident visible wavelength band being at least 60% of the incident light in the incident visible band, thereby providing projected images having reduced speckle contrast relative to projected images formed on a projection display surface that does not include the fluorescent agent.

2. The projection apparatus of claim 1 wherein the projection display surface also provides reduced observer metameric failure artifacts.

3. The projection apparatus of claim 1 wherein the first emissive bandwidth is wider than the bandwidth of the first incident visible wavelength band and is at least five nanometers in width.

4. The projection apparatus of claim 1 wherein the first emissive bandwidth is no more than 50 nanometers.

5. The projection apparatus of claim 1 wherein the first emissive peak wavelength is shifted relative to the first incident peak wavelength.

6. The projection apparatus of claim 5 wherein the first emissive peak wavelength is shifted by no more than 40 nanometers relative to the first incident peak wavelength.

7. The projection apparatus of claim 1 wherein the first emissive peak wavelength is longer than the first peak wavelength, and wherein the projection display surface further includes a second fluorescent agent that absorbs a fraction of the incident light in the first visible wavelength bands and emits light in a corresponding second emissive visible wavelength band having a second emissive peak wavelength and a second emissive bandwidth, the second emissive peak wavelength being shorter than the first peak wavelength.

8. The projection apparatus of claim 1 wherein the fluorescent agent is a fluorescent dye.

9. The projection apparatus of claim 8 wherein the fluorescent dye is rhodamine 6G, Alexa Fluor 532 or BODIPY 530/550.

10. The projection apparatus of claim 1 wherein the fluorescent agent is a quantum dot.

11. The projection apparatus of claim 10 wherein the quantum dots are fabricated using CdS, CdSe, ZnSe, InAs, GaAs or GaN.

12. The projection apparatus of claim 1 wherein the fluorescent agent is uniformly distributed on the substrate.

13. The projection apparatus of claim 1 wherein the fluorescent agent is sparsely distributed on the substrate.

14. The projection apparatus of claim 1 wherein an amount of the fluorescent agent distributed over the reflective layer is adjusted to substantially minimize a speckle visibility.

15. The projection apparatus of claim 1 wherein the substrate is made of a reflective material, and wherein the reflective layer corresponds to the top surface of the substrate.

16. The projection apparatus of claim 1 further including a protective coating layer that protects the projection display surface.

17. The projection apparatus of claim 14 wherein the fluorescent agent is included in the protective coating layer.

18. The projection apparatus of claim 14 wherein the protective coating layer is applied over the top of the fluorescent agent.

19. The projection apparatus of claim 1 wherein the projection display surface is polarization preserving such that polarization of the return light is substantially the same as the polarization of the incident light.

20. The projection apparatus of claim 1 wherein the incident light in the first incident visible wavelength band and the return light from the projection display have CIE x and y chromaticity coordinates that differ by less than 0.10.

21. The projection apparatus of claim 1 wherein the speckle artifacts are reduced by the mechanism of spectral broadening.

22. The projection apparatus of claim 1 further including a color processor for color correcting the color digital image data to account for the spectral characteristics of the light emitted by the fluorescent agent.

The projection apparatus of claim 22 wherein the color processor applies a color correction matrix to the color digital image data, wherein the color correction matrix accounts for differences between color characteristics of the color digital image data and color characteristics of the return light from the projection display surface including the light emitted by the fluorescent agent.

24. The projection apparatus of claim 1 wherein the projection apparatus is a digital motion picture projection apparatus.

25. The projection apparatus of claim 1 wherein the projection apparatus is a digital pico projection apparatus.

26. The projection apparatus of claim 1 wherein the narrow band light sources are laser light sources.

27. The projection apparatus of claim 1 wherein the narrow band light sources are red, green and blue light sources.

28. The projection apparatus of claim 1 further including one or more light absorbing agents which absorb ambient light in one or more wavelength bands which do not substantially overlap with the incident visible wavelength band or the emissive visible wavelength band.

29. A method for projecting a color image, the method comprising:

a) forming a color image by modulating narrow band light from at least three narrow band light sources having first, second and third visible wavelength bands, respectively, wherein each visible wavelength band has an associated peak wavelength and an associated bandwidth;

b) projecting the modulated narrow band light from color image onto a display surface, wherein the display surface includes

i) a reflective layer that reflects incident illumination in the first, second, and third wavelength bands; and

ii) a fluorescent agent that absorbs a fraction of the incident light in the first visible wavelength bands and emits light at wavelengths near the first wavelength band, wherein the fraction of the light in the incident visible wavelength band that is absorbed by the fluorescent agent is between 2% and 40%, and wherein the majority of the remaining fraction of the light in the incident visible wavelength band is reflected by the reflective laver; and

c) providing viewable return light from the projection display surface produced when the modulated narrow band light is incident on the projection display surface, the return light having both reflected light in both the incident visible wavelength band that was not absorbed by the fluorescent agent and was reflected from the reflective layer and light in the emissive visible wavelength band that was emitted by the fluorescent agent, the reflected light in the incident visible wavelength band being at least 60% of the incident light in the incident visible band, thereby providing projected images having reduced speckle contrast relative to projected images formed on a projection display surface that does not include the fluorescent agent.
