Abstract

An apparatus including a first surface configured to attach the apparatus to a second surface of another object, and a plurality of elongated nanofibers. Each nanofiber has one end connected to the first surface and an opposite end extending away from the first surface. The plurality of elongated nanofibers is configured to adhere to the second surface by nanoadhesion when brought into contact with the second surface.

Claims (36)

1. A method for producing a smooth athletic apparel seam between a first and second apparel piece, said method comprising:

positioning the first apparel piece having a first and a second surface adjacent to a second apparel piece having a first surface and a second surface so as to define a seam;

reverse folding an edge position of the first apparel piece over an edge portion of the second apparel piece along the seam wherein the first surface of the first garment piece overlaps and abuts the first surface of the second apparel piece;

placing a dry adhesive bonding strip having a first surface containing nanofibrils and a second surface containing nanofibrils along the seam such that the second surface of the bonding strip abuts the reverse folded edge position of the second surface of the first garment piece;

sewing the first and second garment pieces and the bonding strip together by a set stitch running along the seam;

reverse folding the second apparel piece over the bonding strip such that the first surface of the second apparel piece is folded over and abuts against the first surface of the bonding strip while maintaining the bonding strip in a substantially planar condition; and

sewing at least one top stitch through the reverse folded second apparel piece, the bonding strip, the reverse folded edge position of the first apparel piece, an edge position of the second apparel piece and the first apparel piece along the seam.

2. A method for producing a smooth athletic apparel seam between a first and second apparel piece, said method comprising:

positioning the first apparel piece having a first and a second surface adjacent to a second apparel piece having a first surface and a second surface so as to define a seam, the first apparel piece having a plurality of nanofibrils on an edge portion thereof and the second apparel piece having a plurality of nanofibrils on an edge portion thereof;

reverse folding the edge position of the first apparel piece over the edge portion of the second apparel piece along the seam wherein the first surface of the first garment piece overlaps and abuts the first surface of the second apparel piece;

sewing the first and second garment pieces together by a stitch running along the seam;

reverse folding the second apparel piece over the first apparel piece such that the first surface of the second apparel piece is folded over and abuts against the first surface of the first apparel piece; and

sewing at least one stitch through the reverse folded second apparel piece and the reverse folded edge position of the first apparel piece along the seam.

3. The method according to claim 2 , wherein the first apparel piece has a plurality of nanofibrils on each of both sides of the edge portion.

4. The method according to claim 2 , wherein the second apparel piece has a plurality of nanofibrils on each of both sides of the edge portion.

5. The method according to claim 2 , wherein the first apparel piece is reverse folded to cover the plurality of nanofibrils on the edge portion of the second apparel piece.

6. The method according to claim 2 , wherein the second apparel piece is reverse folded to cover the plurality of nanofibrils on the edge portion of the first apparel piece.

7. A pair of competitive goggles used by a swimmer, the goggles comprising:

a right lens cup, said right lens cup adapted to fit over a right eye of the swimmer, the right lens cup including

a first transparent surface, said first transparent surface adapted to allow the swimmer to view objects while underwater from the right eye of the swimmer, and

a first interface, said first interface forming a first substantially water tight seal between the right lens cup and a right eye socket of the swimmer, the first interface including a first set of nanofibrils configured to make a first adhesive contact with the right eye socket of the swimmer;

a left lens cup including

a second transparent surface, said second transparent surface adapted to allow the swimmer to view objects while underwater from the left eye of the swimmer, and

a second interface, said left eye interface adapted to form a second substantially water tight seal between the left lens cup and a left eye socket of the swimmer, the second interface including a second set of nanofibrils adapted to make a second adhesive contact with the left eye socket of the swimmer;

a strap, said strap adapted to connect the left and right lens cups and contact a back portion of the swimmer's head; and

a cup bridge, the bridge adapted to connect the left and right lens cups and maintain a fixed minimum distance between the lens cups in opposition to the strap.

8. The goggles according to claim 7 , wherein the first and second interfaces each include a rubber gasket.

9. The goggles according to claim 8 , wherein each rubber gasket is connected to a frame which holds each corresponding transparent surface, and each corresponding set of nanofibrils is attached to the rubber gasket.

10. The goggles according to claim 7 , wherein each corresponding set of nanofibrils is attached to a corresponding interface using an adhesive.

11. The goggles according to claim 7 , wherein each nanofibrils has a diameter of 250 nm to 1 μm.

12. The goggles according to claim 7 , wherein each nanofibrils has a length of 5 to 100 μm.

13. A running shoe used by a runner, the shoe comprising:

an upper, said upper configured to fit over a top portion of a runner's foot;

a midsole, the midsole configured to provide cushion to a bottom portion of the runner's foot and is connected to the upper via a sewn interface;

an outsole, the outsole configured to provide traction between the running shoe and a road and is connected to the midsole via a nanofibril dry adhesive; and

a removable insole, the insole configured to provide extra cushioning to the runner's foot and to be sandwiched between a bottom portion of the runner's foot and a top surface of the midsole.
