Abstract

A method includes exchanging information between a local web-server of a local storage device and a remote web-server through a network. The exchange of the information is initiated autonomously by the local storage device upon a determination by the local web server that the information is not stored at the local storage device.

Claims (25)

1. A method comprising:

receiving a first request at a data storage device from a host device to provide information to the host device, wherein the data storage device includes a local web-server and is at least one of a flash-memory device, a subscriber identity module (SIM) card, and a memory card, and wherein the local web-server provides local data residing in the host device, and wherein the data storage device is attached to or embedded within the host device; and

in response to receipt of the first request, autonomously initiating, by the local web-server, an exchange of the information via a network interface of the host device between the local web-server and a remote web-server by sending a second request for the information to the remote web-server, wherein the exchange is autonomously initiated conditioned on a determination that the information is not stored in the data storage device, and wherein the exchange between the local web-server and the remote web-server occurs without the host device providing a man-machine interface.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the information is exchanged according to a prioritization protocol determined at least in part by data usage statistics.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the prioritization protocol takes into account data usage according to at least one of times of data usage, days of data usage, dates of data usage, and locations of data usage.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the exchange is autonomously initiated conditioned on an availability of network bandwidth of a network by which to exchange the information.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the exchange of the information includes receiving the information by the data storage device from the remote web-server.

6. The method of claim 5 , further comprising after receiving the information by the data storage device, providing the information to a host application of the host device.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the exchange of the information includes synchronization with the remote web-server to update data residing at a cache of the data storage device.

8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising routing the information from the network interface to a device manager of the host device.

9. The method of claim 8 , further comprising routing the information from the device manager to the data storage device.

10. The method of claim 1 , further comprising sending a request from the local web-server to a device manager of the host device, wherein the device manager communicates the request to the network interface, wherein the network interface communicates the request to the remote web-server.

The method of claim 1 , wherein the network interface is a local web-server agent (LWSA) residing in the host device and is configured to manage data communication between the data storage device and a communication stack of the host device, wherein the communication stack is configured to communicate with an external network.

12. The method of claim 1 , wherein the network interface is configured to perform interfacing by identifying a plurality of internal addresses of data packets, wherein the internal addresses are each associated with one of the data storage device and the host device.

13. A data storage device comprising:

a memory; and

a local web-server communicatively coupled to the memory, the local web-server configured to receive a first request to provide information, the first request received from a host application of a host device,

wherein the local web-server is configured, in response to the first request, to autonomously initiate communication of a second request to a remote web-server via a network interface of the host device, the second request including instructions to provide the information to the data storage device, wherein the second request is initiated conditioned upon a determination by the local web-server that the information is not stored in the memory, wherein communication of the second request between the local web-server and the remote web-server occurs without the host device providing a man-machine interface, and wherein the data storage device is at least one of a flash-memory device, a subscriber identity module (SIM) card, and a memory card.

14. The data storage device of claim 13 , wherein the local web-server is further configured to receive the first request via a first path and to receive the information from the remote web-server via a second path that is distinct from the first path.

15. The data storage device of claim 13 , wherein the second request is initiated conditioned on a prediction by the local web-server that the information resides on the remote web-server.

16. The data storage device of claim 13 , wherein the local web-server is further configured to receive the information from the remote web-server and to provide the information to the host application.

17. The data storage device of claim 13 , wherein the second request is initiated conditioned upon an indication of available network bandwidth of a network by which to provide the information to the data storage device.

The data storage device of claim 13 , wherein in response to the second request, the information is received according to a prioritization protocol that is determined at least in part by data usage statistics, and wherein the data usage statistics include at least one of times of data usage, days of data usage, dates of data usage, and locations of data usage.

The data storage device of claim 13 , wherein the local storage web-server is configured to initiate exchanging the information between the remote web-server and the data storage device in response to an indication of available network bandwidth for communication between the remote web-server and the host device.

20. The data storage device of claim 13 , wherein the local web-server is operative to use a prioritization protocol determined at least in part by data usage statistics, where the data usage statistics include at least one of times of data usage, days of data usage, and dates of data usage.
