Abstract

Firearms and firearm components are constructed from bonded multi-metallic base materials comprising at least two dissimilar metallic materials having different properties, such as weight, density, wear resistance, durability, hardness, and the like, bonded to one another. The components are fabricated such that the metallic material having higher impact- and wear-resistance is positioned at areas that experience impact, or that include bearing points, wear points, and interfaces with other components, while a lighter weight metallic material is positioned at component locations that don't have rigorous material property requirements. The bonded multi-metallic materials may be explosively bonded multi-metallic materials.

Claims (23)

1. A firearm component fabricated from a bonded multi-metallic material comprising at least two metallic materials having different properties metallurgically bonded to one another in a metallurgical bond region, wherein the metallurgical bond region is planar, wherein the at least two metallic materials have different wear- and impact-resistant properties, and wherein a greater wear and impact-resistant metallic material is arranged at a portion of the firearm component that experiences wear or impact or movement in relation to other surfaces or components.

2. A firearm component of claim 1 , wherein the bonded multi-metallic material is fabricated from an explosively bonded multi-metallic material.

3. A firearm component of claim 1 , wherein the bonded multi-metallic material comprises an iron-containing metal bonded to a metal having lighter weight properties.

4. A firearm component of claim 3 , wherein the lighter weight metal comprises at least one of the following metals: aluminum, an aluminum alloy, titanium, a titanium alloy, magnesium, and a magnesium alloy.

5. A firearm component of claim 1 , wherein the bonded multi-metallic material comprises at least two dissimilar metallic materials bonded along a bond line using at least one interlayer.

6. A firearm component of claim 5 , wherein the interlayer comprises a metallic material.

A firearm component of claim 1 , wherein at least one metallic material is selected from the group consisting of: aluminum, an aluminum-containing alloy, niobium, an iron-containing alloy, titanium, a titanium-containing alloy; tantalum, magnesium, a magnesium-containing alloy, and a copper-containing alloy.

8. A firearm component of claim 1 , wherein at least one metallic material comprises an iron-containing metal and another metallic material comprises an aluminum-containing metal.

9. A firearm component of claim 1 , wherein at least one metallic material comprises an iron-containing metal and another metallic material comprises a titanium-containing metal.

10. A firearm component of claim 1 , wherein at least one metallic material comprises a titanium-containing metal and another metallic material comprises an aluminum-containing metal.

11. A firearm component of claim 1 , wherein at least one metallic material comprises an iron-containing metal and another metallic material comprises a magnesium-containing metal.

12. A firearm component of claim 1 , wherein at least one metallic material comprises a titanium-containing metal and another metallic material comprises a magnesium-containing metal.

13. A firearm component of claim 1 , wherein at least one metallic material is selected from the group consisting of one of the following stainless steels: 301, 302, 303, 303Se, 304, 304L, 309, 316, 316L, 410, 416, 440AQ, 440B and 440C.

14. A firearm component of claim 1 , wherein at least one metallic material is selected from the group consisting of: titanium, a titanium alloy of the R50000 series, and a titanium alloy having an ASTM B 265 designation ranging from Grades 1-5.

15. A firearm component of claim 1 , wherein at least one metallic material is selected from the group consisting of: aluminum, an aluminum alloy selected from the group consisting of 2024, 5086, 6061, 6063 and 7075, and an aluminum alloy containing scandium.

A firearm component of claim 1 , wherein the component is selected from the following: frame or body; slide; barrel; sear; stock; handle; extractor; sub-frame; receiver; block; door; roller; trunion; actuator; magazine well; housing component; trigger mechanism; safety mechanism; firing chamber; grip; plunger; ejector and sights.

17. A firearm comprising at least one of the components of claim 16 .

18. A firearm component of claim 1 , wherein the component is a semi-automatic pistol slide.

19. A firearm component of claim 1 , wherein the component is a semi-automatic pistol frame.

20. A firearm component of claim 1 , wherein a thickness dimension of the at least two metallic materials is unequal.

A firearm component of claim 1 , fabricated from a bonded multi-metallic material composed of at least three metallic layers, wherein at least one intermediate layer having a generally lighter weight property is bonded on either side along planar bond regions to heavier weight materials having generally hard, impact- and wear-resistant properties.

A firearm component of claim 1 , wherein the at least two metallic materials have different properties selected from the group consisting of: weight, density, wear-resistance; impact-resistance; durability; hardness; toughness; magnetic properties; metallic luster; color; rigidity; cost; corrosion-resistance; fracture toughness; fatigue-resistance; creep-resistance; elastic modulus; yield strength; resistance to stress or cracking; mechinability; and anti-galling properties.

23. A firearm pistol frame component of claim 19 , wherein upper surfaces of the frame member component that engage a slide in an assembled firearm are composed of a more impact-resistant metallic layer and the bond line is arranged below the upper surfaces.
