Browsing history restoration
View Patent ↗Systems and methods are presented for restoring and/or utilizing browsing history for dynamically-generated or modified content is described. In one embodiment, the method includes: in response to a user request to display a page of information including a navigational element on a computing device, obtaining a content identifier for content associated with the navigational element, identifying a stored content identifier associated with the content and corresponding to a prior navigational element that was previously viewed on the computing device, verifying the prior navigational element associated with the stored content identifier, and setting at least one property of the navigational element to indicate, when displayed, that the content associated with the navigational element was previously viewed on the computing device.
1. A computer-implemented method for identifying previously-visited items in a search session, comprising:
under the control of one or more computer systems configured with executable instructions,
in response to a user request to display information related to a search for an item on a client computing device during a current search session, obtaining at least one item identifier associated with the item using a trusted script executing on the client computing device;
determining whether the obtained item identifier matches any stored item identifier for a previous search session associated with the user;
if the obtained item identifier matches a stored item identifier, providing the matched item identifier, time data associated with the matched item identifier, and a last visited resource identifier for the matched item to the trusted script;
verifying the last visited resource identifier using the trusted script; and
if the last visited resource identifier is verified, setting at least one property of a link to an item associated with the matched item identifier to indicate, when displayed, that the link is associated with a previously viewed item,
wherein a link to a previously-viewed item is distinguished from other links displayed on the client computing device independent of whether a current resource identifier for the item is the same as the last visited resource identifier.
2. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein verifying the last visited resource identifier with the browser comprises determining whether the last visited resource identifier matches any of resource identifiers from a previous search session stored by the browser.
3. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , further comprising:
in response to a request to delete stored item identifiers associated with previous search sessions, deleting the stored item identifiers.
4. A computer-implemented method for identifying previously-visited items, the method comprising:
under control of instructions executed by at least one processor of a computer system,
collecting one or more item identifiers associated with one or more items currently viewed by a user on a Web site;
determining whether one or more of the collected one or more item identifiers is associated with items previously viewed by the user on the Web site;
if one or more of the collected one or more item identifiers is associated with one or more previously viewed items, verifying with a browser rendering the Web site to the user a resource identifier associated with a last viewed of the one or more previously viewed items; and
if the resource identifier associated with a last viewed of the one or more previously viewed items is verified,
marking each of the links to items associated with the one or more previously viewed items so as to distinguish the marked links from links associated with currently viewed items that were not previously viewed; and
inserting in each of the marked links at least one title attribute associated with the one or more previously viewed items so that the at least one title attribute becomes visible when the link is accessed by the user.

The computer-implemented method of claim 4 , wherein marking each of links comprises one of coloring the links in a color that is different from a color of the links associated with currently viewed items that were not previously viewed, displaying the links above the links associated with currently viewed items that were not previously viewed, or rendering the links in a font size that is different from a font size used for the links associated with currently viewed items that were not previously viewed.
6. The computer-implemented method of claim 4 , wherein the at least one title attribute comprises timing information indicating a time of viewing a previously viewed item.
7. The computer-implemented method of claim 4 , wherein the item identifiers associated with the currently viewed items that were not previously viewed are recorded in a database associated with the Web site.
8. A system for identifying previously-visited items in a search session, comprising:
at least one device processor; and
device memory including instructions that, when executed by the at least one device processor, cause the system to:
in response to a user request to display information related to a search for an item on a client computing device during a current search session, obtain at least one item identifier associated with the item using a trusted script executing on the client computing device;
determine whether the obtained item identifier matches any stored item identifier for a previous search session associated with the user;
if the obtained item identifier matches a stored item identifier, provide the matched item identifier, time data associated with the matched item identifier, and a last visited resource identifier for the matched item to the trusted script;
verify the last visited resource identifier using the trusted script; and
if the last visited resource identifier is verified, set at least one property of a link to an item associated with the matched item identifier to indicate, when displayed, that the link is associated with a previously viewed item,
wherein a link to a previously-viewed item is distinguished from other links displayed on the client computing device independent of whether a current resource identifier for the item is the same as the last visited resource identifier.
9. The system of claim 8 , wherein verifying the last visited resource identifier with the browser comprises determining whether the last visited resource identifier matches any of resource identifiers from a previous search session stored by the browser.
10. The system of claim 8 , further comprising:
in response to a request to delete stored item identifiers associated with previous search sessions, delete the stored item identifiers.
11. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium including instructions for identifying previously-visited items, the instructions when executed by at least one processor of a computing system causing the computing system to:
collect one or more item identifiers associated with one or more items currently viewed by a user on a Web site;
determining whether one or more of the collected one or more item identifiers is associated with items previously viewed by the user on the Web site;
if one or more of the collected one or more item identifiers is associated with one or more previously viewed items, verifying with a browser rendering the Web site to the user a resource identifier associated with a last viewed of the one or more previously viewed items; and
if the resource identifier associated with a last viewed of the one or more previously viewed items is verified,
mark each of the links to items associated with the one or more previously viewed items so as to distinguish the marked links from links associated with currently viewed items that were not previously viewed; and
insert in each of the marked links at least one title attribute associated with the one or more previously viewed items so that the at least one title attribute becomes visible when the link is accessed by the user.

The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 11 , wherein marking each of links comprises one of coloring the links in a color that is different from a color of the links associated with currently viewed items that were not previously viewed, displaying the links above the links associated with currently viewed items that were not previously viewed, or rendering the links in a font size that is different from a font size used for the links associated with currently viewed items that were not previously viewed.
13. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 11 , wherein the at least one title attribute comprises timing information indicating a time of viewing a previously viewed item.
14. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 11 , wherein the item identifiers associated with the currently viewed items that were not previously viewed are recorded in a database associated with the Web site.
