Abstract

A print engine for a printer unit includes a cradle unit including a print engine controller provided on flex printed circuit board, and a cover assembly for covering a recess defined by the cradle; a replaceable cartridge unit received within the recess of the cradle unit in a releasable manner, the replaceable cartridge having a body, an ink storage module assembly, and a pagewidth printhead assembly; and a print media transport means for transporting print media. The ink storage module assembly includes a plurality of ink storage modules received in the body from a first side, and the pagewidth printhead assembly is mounted to the body at a second side opposite the first side. The cover assembly is engaged with the flex printed circuit board to pivot the flex printed circuit board in and out of electrical engagement with the pagewidth printhead assembly upon closing and opening of the cover assembly with respect to the recess.

Claims (15)

1. A print engine for a printer unit, the print engine comprising:

a cradle unit including a print engine controller provided on flex printed circuit board, and a cover assembly for covering a recess defined by the cradle;

a replaceable cartridge unit received within the recess of the cradle unit in a releasable manner, the replaceable cartridge unit having a body, an ink storage module assembly, and a pagewidth printhead assembly; and

a print media transport means for transporting print media, wherein

the ink storage module assembly includes a plurality of ink storage modules received in the body from a first side, and the pagewidth printhead assembly is mounted to the body at a second side opposite the first side, and

the cover assembly is engaged with the flex printed circuit board to pivot the flex printed circuit board in and out of an electrical engagement with the pagewidth printhead assembly upon closing and opening of the cover assembly with respect to the recess.

2. A print engine as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the ink storage module assembly has a docking interface for docking with a refill supply of ink to replenish ink in the storage module assembly.

3. A print engine as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the body includes a substantially rectangular frame having an open top in which the ink storage module is received and a pair of posts projecting from the frame at either end to mount a maintenance assembly to the body.

4. A print engine as claimed in claim 3 , wherein the body has an ink outlet molding defining ink outlets corresponding to respective ink storage modules, each of the ink outlets having at least one inwardly extending silicone ring seal co-molded with the ink outlet molding and configured to seal against ink inlets of the printhead assembly.

5. A print engine as claimed in claim 4 , wherein the ink outlet molding is ultrasonically welded to the rectangular frame.

6. A print engine as claimed in claim 5 , wherein the frame has a longitudinally extending wall along which extends a series of ink downpipes, each downpipe having an O-ring seal to form a sealed connection with an ink outlet of a respective ink storage module.

7. A print engine as claimed in claim 6 wherein, when the ink outlet molding is welded to the frame, each ink downpipe is in fluid communication with respective ink outlets of the ink outlet molding.

8. A print engine as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the cradle unit comprises a cover assembly, the cover assembly being movable between a closed position in which the replaceable cartridge unit is mechanically secured in the cradle unit, and an opened position in which removal of the replaceable cartridge unit is facilitated.

9. A print engine as claimed in claim 8 , wherein the cover assembly is adapted to mechanically bias the print engine controller into an electrical contact with the printhead assembly when the cover assembly is moved from the opened position to the closed position.

10. A print engine as claimed in claim 8 , wherein the cover assembly biases the print engine controller out of the electrical contact with the printhead assembly when the cover assembly is moved from the closed position to the opened position.
