Abstract

A system and apparatus are disclosed including PV modules having a frame allowing quick and easy assembling of the PV modules into a PV array in a sturdy and durable manner. In examples of the present technology, the PV modules may have a grooved frame where the groove is provided at an angle with respect to a planar surface of the modules. Various couplings may engage within the groove to assemble the PV modules into the PV array with a pivot-fit connection. Further examples of the present technology operate with PV modules having frames without grooves, or with PV modules where the frame is omitted altogether.

Claims (26)

1. A photovoltaic module dimensioned for components to pivot lock thereto, comprising:

(a) a photovoltaic laminate;

(b) a frame member extending along a side edge of the photovoltaic laminate; and

(c) an outwardly facing side groove in the frame member, wherein the side groove is dimensioned to receive a component that pivot locks therein, and wherein

(i) the innermost edge of the top of the outer opening of the side groove is lower than the outermost edge of the top of the outer opening of the side groove, and

(ii) the innermost edge of the bottom of the outer opening of the side groove is lower than the outermost edge of the bottom of the outer opening of the side groove.

2. The photovoltaic module of claim 1 , wherein the outer opening of the side groove is angled with respect to the plane of the photovoltaic laminate.

3. The photovoltaic module of claim 2 , wherein the outer opening of the side groove defines an angled insertion path for a component to be fully inserted therein.

4. The photovoltaic module of claim 1 , wherein the outer opening of the side groove is defined by a pair of generally parallel sloped upper and lower surfaces that are angled with respect to the plane of the photovoltaic laminate.

5. The photovoltaic module of claim 1 , wherein the side groove has a mid-portion with an upper recess and a lower recess defining a key slot.

6. The photovoltaic module of claim 5 , wherein a portion of the component can be rotated into the key slot after the component has first been inserted through the outer opening of the side groove, and then pivoted downwardly into a locked position.

7. The photovoltaic module of claim 5 , wherein the outer opening of the side groove comprises an upper bearing surface at an inner top edge, and a lower bearing surface at a bottom outer edge.

8. The photovoltaic module of claim 7 , wherein the upper and lower bearing surfaces push against the component after the component has been pivot locked into the side groove.

9. The photovoltaic module of claim 1 , wherein the innermost edge of the top of the outer opening and the outermost edge of the bottom of the outer opening are both curved.

10. The photovoltaic module of claim 1 , wherein the component is a leveling foot or a frame-to-frame interlock.

11. The photovoltaic module of claim 1 , wherein the outer opening of the groove elastically deforms to flex open when the component is pivoted downwardly into its locked position.

12. A combination photovoltaic module and interlocked component assembly, comprising:

(a) a photovoltaic laminate;

(b) a frame member extending along a side edge of the photovoltaic laminate;

(c) an outwardly facing side groove in the frame member, wherein

(i) the innermost edge of the top of the outer opening of the side groove is lower than the outermost edge of the top of the outer opening of the side groove, and

(ii) the innermost edge of the bottom of the outer opening of the side groove is lower than the outermost edge of the bottom of the outer opening of the side groove; and

(d) a mounting component interlocked into the outwardly facing side groove in the frame member, wherein the mounting component is inserted through the outer opening of the groove at an angle to the plane of the photovoltaic laminate and then pivoted to lock into the side groove.

13. The assembly of claim 12 , wherein the mounting component is a levelling foot or frame-to-frame interlock.

14. The assembly of claim 12 , wherein the outer opening of the side groove is angled with respect to the plane of the photovoltaic laminate.

15. The assembly of claim 12 , wherein the side groove has a mid-portion with an upper recess and a lower recess defining a key slot, and wherein a portion of the mounting component is rotated into the key slot about an axis perpendicular to the side groove after the mounting component has first been inserted through the outer opening of the side groove, and then pivoted downwardly about an axis parallel to the side groove into a locked position.
