Abstract

The present disclosure relates to the wireless communication of information for a hearing assistance device including a multi-mode radio adapted to provide communications at different frequencies using frequency control. In applications of hearing aids, the processor is adapted to perform correction of sound for a hearing impaired user. In certain examples the present subject matter provides an inductive portion for inductive communications. In various applications the multi-mode radio can be used for long range and short range communications.

Claims (27)

1. A hearing aid for a wearer having a hearing impairment, the hearing aid adapted to perform wireless communications, comprising:

one or more antennas;

a receiver comprising a multi-mode radio with frequency control adapted to provide near range and long range operation and to select modulation techniques for transmission and reception, the receiver configured to perform antenna selection and adapted to receive signals from the one or more antennas, wherein the multi-mode radio includes an inductive radio for the hearing aid; and

a processor in communication with the multi-mode radio, the processor configured to process signals to correct for the hearing impairment of the wearer and for receipt of information from the receiver, and configured to control frequency of operation of the multi-mode radio.

2. The hearing aid of claim 1 , wherein the processor is adapted to perform frequency control of a local oscillator of the multi-mode radio.

3. The hearing aid of claim 1 , further comprising a high frequency radio and a low frequency radio, the high frequency and low frequency radios connected to provide received information to the processor.

4. The hearing aid of claim 3 , further comprising a multiplexer configured to selectably receive the information from the high frequency radio and low frequency radio and provide the information to the processor.

5. The hearing aid of claim 1 , further comprising a received signal strength indication (RSSI) module to provide input for selection of frequency by the multi-mode radio.

6. The hearing aid of claim 1 , wherein the multi-mode radio is realized at least partially using an integrated circuit.

7. The hearing aid of claim 1 , further comprising a microphone to receive sound and convert it to an electrical signal that is provided to the processor.

8. The hearing aid of claim 7 , further comprising a speaker adapted to receive processed signals from the processor and to play sound for the wearer using the signals.

9. The hearing aid of claim 3 , further comprising an antenna matching circuit that is programmable for a selected frequency of operation of the multi-mode radio.

10. The hearing aid of claim 3 , wherein the hearing aid is programmed to use the low frequency radio for short range communications and the high frequency radio for long range communications.

11. The hearing aid of claim 1 , wherein the multi-mode radio performs transmissions controllable by the processor.

12. The hearing aid of claim 11 , further comprising an inductive radio and a coil antenna for inductive communications, the inductive radio adapted to provide received information to the processor.

13. The hearing aid of claim 12 , wherein the inductive radio is adapted to transmit using transmission information received from the processor.

14. The hearing aid of claim 10 , wherein the transmissions are programmable to be one or more of frequency shift keying (FSK), frequency modulation (FM), amplitude modulation (AM), single sideband (SSB), spread spectrum, quaternary amplitude modulation (QAM), phase shift keying (PSK), quaternary phase shift keying (QPSK) or pulse width modulation (PWM).

15. The hearing aid of claim 10 , wherein the baseband circuitry is common for the high frequency radio and for the low frequency radio.

16. A method of communications for a hearing aid, comprising:

controlling frequency of operation of a multi-mode radio including a high frequency radio and a low frequency radio by inputs to a local oscillator, wherein the multi-mode radio includes an inductive radio for the hearing aid and is configured to perform antenna selection and to select modulation techniques for transmission and reception;

receiving wireless signals from another device using the multi-mode radio;

demodulating information from the wireless signals; and

sending the information to a processor of the hearing aid, the processor configured to process signals to correct for hearing impairment of a wearer and configured to control frequency of operation of the multi-mode radio.

17. The method of claim 16 , further comprising receiving signals from another wireless device using an inductive portion of the hearing aid.

18. The method of claim 16 , wherein the low frequency radio is used for near range communications and the high frequency radio is used for long range communications.

19. The method of claim 18 , wherein the high frequency radio and low frequency radio are adapted to perform one or more of: ear-to-ear communications; ear-to-remote device communications; wireless programming, configuration and data logging; streaming audio; bi-directional audio; or remote control.

20. The method of claim 17 , wherein the high frequency radio and inductive portion are programmable to provide separate communication channels supporting concurrent communications.
