Abstract

Some injectors of the invention may include a fluid drive responsive to pressure of a working fluid (e.g., liquid, pneumatic, or both) to impart a sequence of forces to drive a delivery device (e.g., a syringe) to deliver a medical fluid (e.g., a contrast agent, a radiopharmaceutical, a drug, or a combination thereof). Some injectors may include a multimedia tube configured to pass a working fluid (e.g., air) and a light signal (e.g., infrared). Some injectors may include a peristaltic drive responsive to pressure of a working fluid.

Claims (29)

1. A medical fluid injector for use in an MRI procedure, comprising:

a substantially non-ferrous and substantially non-magnetic fluid drive responsive to pressure of a working fluid to impart a sequence of forces to drive a delivery device to flow medical fluid, wherein the fluid drive comprises a piston disposed in a cylinder, a rod coupled to the piston, and a rotary ratchet coupled to the rod, and the fluid drive is configured to not interfere with magnetic resonance imaging, wherein the rotary ratchet is configured to sequentially engage teeth of a gear in response to oscillating motion of the piston in the cylinder, wherein the rotary ratchet comprises a first arm to sequentially engage the teeth of the gear, and wherein the rotary ratchet comprises a second arm to sequentially engage the teeth of the gear at a location that is spaced from where the first arm sequentially engages the teeth of the gear.

2. The injector of claim 1 , wherein the fluid drive is configured to not emit or detect radio frequency radiation.

3. The injector of claim 1 , wherein the injector is configured to mount inside an imaging bore of a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) system.

4. The injector of claim 1 , wherein the gear is coupled to a ball screw.

5. The injector of claim 4 , wherein the delivery device comprises a plunger disposed in a barrel, and the ball screw is coupled to the plunger.

6. The injector of claim 1 , wherein the first and second arms each reciprocate relative to the gear, wherein when one of the first and second arms is pushing on an individual tooth of the gear, the other of the first and second arms is withdrawing away from another individual tooth of the gear.

7. The injector of claim 1 , wherein only one of the first and second arms is pushing on an individual tooth of the gear at any given time.

8. The injector of claim 1 , further comprising a pump coupled to the fluid drive.

9. The injector of claim 8 , further comprising conduit leading from the pump to the fluid drive.

10. The injector of claim 8 , further comprising a control coupled to the pump.

11. The injector of claim 10 , further comprising a feedback sensor coupled to the control, wherein the feedback sensor is configured to monitor at least one of the delivery device and the fluid drive.

12. The injector of claim 11 , wherein the feedback sensor is selected from the group consisting of a potentiometer, an optical encoder, or a combination thereof.

13. The injector of claim 8 , wherein the pump provides a working fluid to the fluid drive.

14. An injection system comprising the injector of claim 1 , and a delivery device that comprises a syringe.

15. The injection system of claim 14 , further comprising a patient mount configured to support at least one of the delivery device and the fluid drive.

16. An injection system comprising the injector of claim 1 , and a delivery device that has an output disposed generally proximate the fluid drive.

17. The injection system of claim 16 , further comprising a patient mount configured to support at least one of the delivery device and the fluid drive.

18. A medical fluid injector for use in an MRI procedure, comprising: a substantially non-ferrous and substantially non-magnetic fluid drive responsive to pressure of a working fluid, wherein the fluid drive is configured to not interfere with magnetic resonance imaging, and wherein the fluid drive comprises a piston disposed in a cylinder and a rod coupled to the piston; a toothed member comprising a plurality of spaced teeth, wherein the toothed member comprises a rotatable gear; a ram interconnected with the toothed structure; and a first ratchet interconnected with the rod of the fluid drive and engaged with the toothed member, wherein movement of the piston in response to the pressure of the working fluid causes movement of the rod, which in turn causes movement of the first ratchet, which in turn causes movement of the toothed member, which in turn advances the ram one increment in a medical fluid discharge direction.

19. The injector of claim 18 , wherein the first ratchet allows the toothed member to move in a first direction, but precludes the toothed member from moving in a second direction that is opposite of the first direction.

20. The injector of claim 18 , further comprising a first rotational joint between the rod of the fluid drive and the first ratchet.

21. The injector of claim 18 , further comprising a second ratchet interconnected with the rod of the fluid drive and engaged with the toothed member at a different location than the first ratchet.

22. The injector of claim 21 , further comprising a common rotational joint between the rod of the fluid drive and each of the first and second ratchets.

23. The injector of claim 21 , wherein each of the first and second ratchets allow the toothed member to move in a first direction, but preclude the toothed member from moving in a second direction that is opposite of the first direction.

The injector of claim 21 , wherein movement of the piston in one direction in response to the pressure of the working fluid pushes the rod, which in turn causes the first ratchet to push on an individual tooth of the toothed member to move the toothed member in a first direction and causes the second ratchet to be withdrawn away from another individual tooth of the toothed member.

The injector of claim 24 , wherein movement of the piston in an opposite direction in response to the pressure of the working fluid pulls the rod, which in turn causes the second ratchet to push on an individual tooth of the toothed member to move the toothed member in the first direction and causes the first ratchet to be withdrawn away from another individual tooth of the toothed member.

The injector of claim 25 , wherein the piston separates the cylinder into first and second chambers, wherein the working fluid is contained in each of the first and second chambers, wherein directing a flow of the working fluid into the first chamber moves the piston in the first direction and directs a flow of the working fluid out of the second chamber, and wherein directing a flow of the working fluid into the second chamber moves the piston in the opposite direction and directs a flow of the working fluid out of the first chamber.

The injector of claim 21 , wherein the piston reciprocates in the cylinder, which causes each of the first and second ratchets to reciprocate in alternating fashion relative to the toothed member, wherein when one of the first and second ratchets is pushing on an individual tooth of the gear, the other of the first and second arms is withdrawing away from another individual tooth of the gear.

28. The injector of claim 21 , wherein only one of the first and second ratchets is pushing on an individual tooth of the gear at any given time.
