Abstract

A method and data structure for monitoring the progression of a configuration transaction through a communications network is provided. The method includes creating an audit trail associated with the switch-transaction progression, iteratively updating the audit trail incident to an occurrence of a designated transaction-processing substep without overwriting previously stored data, and processing the audit trail so that it is available for access via a user interface. Historical data tracking the configuration transaction's process is preserved rather than overwritten.

Claims (31)

1. One or more non-transitory memories for storing data associated with creating a transaction-audit trail for access by an application program being executed on a computing device, comprising:

a first data structure stored in the one or more memories, the data structure including a transaction-progression table that tracks a plurality of network configuration transaction statuses respectively associated with completing a plurality of network configuration subtransaction steps; and

a set of computer-useable instructions that prevent subsequent transaction statuses from overwriting previous transaction statuses by creating the transaction-audit trail having the statuses for each subtransaction, wherein the trail is accessed by an application program being executed on a computing device to identify unacceptable time lapses between status changes in the trail and to store a progression for a transaction corresponding to the transaction audit-trail.

2. The memories of claim 1 , wherein the transaction-progression table comprises:

a first field containing data that uniquely identifies one of a plurality of substeps associated with the transaction; and

a second field containing data representing a status of the one of a plurality of substeps.

3. The memories of claim 2 , wherein the first field is a time stamp.

4. The memories of claim 3 , wherein a set of computer-useable instructions includes code for generating respective rows of data, each associated with the one of a plurality of substeps.

5. The memories of claim 1 , further comprising measuring efficiency at each status change.

6. The memories of claim 5 , wherein measuring efficiency at each status change comprises measuring time delays in the processing of the transaction or time delays in updating status changes.

7. The memories of claim 1 , wherein transaction progression is monitored until a configuration fault is detected or the configuration transaction is completed.

8. One or more non-transitory computer-readable media having stored thereon a data structure for monitoring the progression of a telecommunications switch transaction, the data structure comprising:

a first table that stores,

1) a transaction-request identifier;

2) a first set of data that does not change as the switch transaction progresses toward completion, wherein the switch transaction is a configuration command; and

3) business data associated with a customer that does not change as the switch transaction progresses toward completion;

a second table logically associated with the first table that is iteratively updated as the switch transaction progresses towards completion and stores,

1) the transaction-request identifier; and

2) a second set of data that does change as the switch transaction progresses toward completion to monitor the progression of the switch transaction without overwriting the second set of data and to identify component faults associated with components responsible for an action associated with the second set of data.

9. The media of claim 8 , wherein the first set of data includes data related to one or more physical aspects of a communications network.

10. The media of claim 8 , wherein the second set of data includes a status identifier that indicates a status of the switch transaction at a prescribed data event.

11. The media of claim 10 , wherein the prescribed data event is a substep associated with completing the switch transaction.

12. The media of claim 10 , wherein the second set of data further includes a time stamp associated with the prescribed data event.

13. The media of claim 12 , wherein unacceptable lapses between status changes in the second table are based on the time stamp.

14. The media of claim 13 , wherein the time stamp includes when the request leaves a network server and when the communication server receives the request.

15. The media of claim 14 , wherein a difference between the time stamp measures inefficiencies in the communication network.

16. The media of claim 15 , wherein the frequent gaps measuring consistently large differences in the time stamps are identified as unacceptable lapses.

17. The media of claim 12 , wherein component faults are based on the time stamp.

18. The media of claim 17 , wherein the time stamps include when the request leaves a network server and when the communication server receives the request.

19. The media of claim 18 , wherein a difference between the time stamp measures inefficiencies in the communication network.

20. The media of claim 19 , wherein frequent gaps measuring consistently large differences in the time stamps are identified as component faults.
