Abstract

Image-intensifying or night vision glasses are suitable for certain commercial and entertainment applications by virtue of their light weight, small size, and economical production, compared to certain other night vision products. In one embodiment, input light passes through two Amici prisms and a field-flattening lens to reach an image intensifier. The intensified image it produces is reflected off a first folding mirror, passes through a lens, reflects off a curved mirror, and passes back through the lens the other way. The intensified image then passes through two additional, non-doublet lenses, between which an intermediate image exists. The intensified image then reflects off the “lens” or visor of the glasses and proceeds to the pupil of the eye of the wearer. Alternative embodiments use a helmet visor, mirror, or other (at least partially) reflective surface for the final reflection.

Claims (36)

1. Night vision glasses comprising:

a visor having a reflective surface;

an objective lens subsystem comprising two Amici prisms in series;

an image intensifier that receives input light that has passed through the objective lens subsystem including the two Amici prisms and generates an intensified image; and

an eyepiece lens subsystem for receiving the intensified image and for directing the intensified image to the reflective surface, the reflective surface for directing the intensified image to an eye of a wearer of the glasses.

The glasses of claim 1 , further comprising a frame that supports the objective lens subsystem, image intensifier, and eyepiece lens subsystem in relative positions so that the intensified image passes through the eyepiece lens subsystem, then reflects off the reflective surface of the visor to an eye of a user.

3. The glasses of claim 1 , wherein the objective lens subsystem has an F/n aperture, where n is about 2.0 or greater.

4. The glasses of claim 1 , wherein the objective lens subsystem as a whole does not rotate the image.

5. The glasses of claim 1 , wherein the light path through the image intensifier does not include a fiber optic rotation.

6. The glasses of claim 1 , wherein the image intensifier has a glass output window.

7. The glasses of claim 1 , wherein the image intensifier has a fiber-optic output window.

8. The glasses of claim 1 , wherein the image intensifier is a second generation image intensifier.

9. The glasses of claim 1 , wherein the two Amici prisms rotate the image and pass a rotated image to the image intensifier.

10. The glasses of claim 1 , wherein the image intensifier has a glass-type output window.

11. The glasses of claim 1 , wherein the visor reflective surface is curved.

12. The glasses of claim 1 , wherein the visor reflective surface is not curved.

13. The glasses of claim 1 further comprising an optical path through the objective lens subsystem, the image intensifier, and the eyepiece lens subsystem and reflecting off the reflective surface, the optical path having six optical folds.

14. Night vision glasses comprising:

a visor having a reflective surface;

an objective lens subsystem comprising two Amici mirrors in series;

an image intensifier that receives input light that has passed through the objective lens subsystem including the two Amici mirrors and generates an intensified image; and

an eyepiece subsystem for receiving the intensified image and for directing the intensified image to the reflective surface, the reflective surface for directing the intensified image to an eye of a wearer of the glasses.

The glasses of claim 14 , further comprising a frame that supports the objective lens subsystem, image intensifier, and eyepiece subsystem in relative positions so that the intensified image passes through the eyepiece subsystem, then reflects off the reflective surface of the visor to an eye of a user.

16. The glasses of claim 14 , wherein the objective lens subsystem has an F/n aperture, where n is about 2.0 or greater.

17. The glasses of claim 14 , wherein the objective lens subsystem as a whole does not rotate the image.

18. The glasses of claim 14 , wherein the light path through the image intensifier does not include a fiber optic rotation.

19. The glasses of claim 14 , wherein the image intensifier has a glass output window.

20. The glasses of claim 14 , wherein the image intensifier has a fiber-optic output window.

21. The glasses of claim 14 , wherein the image intensifier is a second generation image intensifier.

22. The glasses of claim 14 further comprising an optical path through the objective lens subsystem, the image intensifier, and the eyepiece lens subsystem and reflecting off the reflective surface, the optical path having six optical folds.

23. Night vision glasses comprising:

a visor having a reflective surface;

an objective lens subsystem comprising two optical fold elements selected from the group consisting of fold prisms and Amici reflectors, the two optical fold elements being in series;

an image intensifier that receives input light that has passed through the objective lens subsystem including the two optical fold elements and generates an intensified image; and

an eyepiece lens subsystem for receiving the intensified image and for directing the intensified image to the reflective surface, the reflective surface for directing the intensified image to an eye of a wearer of the glasses.

24. The glasses of claim 23 further comprising an optical path through the objective lens subsystem, the image intensifier, and the eyepiece lens subsystem and reflecting off the reflective surface, the optical path having six optical folds.
