Abstract

The present invention relates to a process used for packaging a product in a web of material that has a zipper attached thereto. The process includes providing a web of material having first and second edges and a zipper including first and second interlocking members. The first and second interlocking members of the zipper are interlocked together. The first interlocking member of the zipper is attached to the web at an intermediate portion of the web between the first and second edges of the web. The second interlocking member has an attachment region that is facing away from the web. One edge of the web is folded away from the zipper and toward the other edge of the web. Unit operations are performed on the zipper to create zipper segments from the zipper while the zipper is exposed. Each of the zipper segments is associated with an individual food package made from the web.

Claims (11)

1 . A method of performing unit operations on a web with an attached zipper, the method comprising:

providing a web and an attached zipper having a continuous input feed rate;

providing a shuttle system including an input roller, an outer roller, a connecting element and means for providing reciprocating movement to said shuttle system to cause intermittent movement of said web and said attached zipper along said web path, said input roller for receiving said web and an attached zipper;

intermittently moving said web and attached zipper along a web path located beyond said input roller and ending at said output roller, said web path including a plurality of stations; and

mechanically altering said attached zipper at said plurality of stations, one of the plurality of stations including a plurality of sliders configured to be placed onto said zipper,

wherein said shuttle system moves at a speed substantially equal to the feed rate of said web as it enters and exits the plurality of stations.

2 . The method of claim 1 wherein the cycle time is less than 1 second.

3 . The method of claim 1 wherein said connecting element is a solid bar.

4 . The method of claim 1 wherein said means for providing reciprocating movement is a motor to assist in said reciprocating movement.

5 . The method of claim 1 wherein said means for providing reciprocating movement is a solenoid to assist in said reciprocating movement.

6 . The method of claim 1 wherein when said shuttle system is adapted to accelerate said web and attached zipper at twice the feed rate when moving in a predefined direction.
