Abstract

A retractable cellular shade is illustrated in various embodiments to consist of a support structure that could assume numerous forms including cellular material, flexible sheets of material, tapes or ribbons, or flexible monofilaments or similar cords of natural or synthetic fibers with the support structure supporting a plurality of vanes or slats in various configurations and orientations. The movement of the vanes or slats is totally dependent upon movement of the support structure. The fabric so formed can be incorporated into a covering for architectural openings with the covering including a headrail with means for gathering the fabric material within the headrail.

Claims (31)

1. A fabric for use in a covering for a building structure comprising in combination:

a flexible vertically extending support structure comprised of a plurality of interconnected, transversely collapsible cells, each of said cells having a top wall, a bottom wall, and a front side wall extending between said top wall and said bottom wall, said front side wall having an upper segment and a lower segment, said upper segment having a longitudinal dimension extending along a length of said cells and a lateral dimension extending orthogonally to said longitudinal dimension; and

a plurality of parallel elongated vanes supported at spaced locations along said support structure, said vanes secured to said support structure along an interface that extends along a majority of said lateral dimension of said upper segment, each of said vanes including a free end cantilevered from said support structure.

2. The fabric of claim 1 wherein said cells are hexagonal in transverse cross-section.

3. The fabric of claim 1 wherein said cells are elongated and connected to adjacent cells along longitudinal lines of connection.

4. The fabric of claim 3 wherein said vanes are secured to said support structure along said lines of connection.

5. The fabric of claim 4 wherein there is at least one line of connection between the two locations where a vane is secured to said support structure.

6. The fabric of claim 5 wherein there are two lines of connection between the two locations where a vane is secured to said support structure.

7. The fabric of claim 1 wherein said vanes are made of a semi-rigid material.

8. The fabric of claim 3 wherein said cells have their longitudinal dimension extending horizontally.

9. The fabric of claim 1 , further comprising a length of adhesive positioned along said interface, wherein said adhesive secures said vanes to said upper portion and said length of said adhesive extends along a length of said interface.

10. The fabric of claim 1 , further comprising a first adhesive length positioned along a top edge of said upper portion and a second adhesive length positioned along a bottom edge of said upper portion, wherein said first adhesive length and said second adhesive length secure said vanes along said interface of said upper portion.

11. A covering for an architectural opening comprising:

a plurality of cells, at least one cell including a side wall having a first segment and a second segment separated by a fold line, said first segment having a longitudinal dimension extending along a length of said at least one cell and a lateral dimension extending orthogonally to said longitudinal dimension; and

at least one vane including a vane length having a first vane length connected to said at least one cell along an interface that extends along a majority of said lateral dimension of said first segment and a second vane length cantilevered from said at least one cell and terminating at a free end; wherein

said at least one cell is movable between a retracted position and an extended position;

said at least one vane moves substantially unitarily with said at least one cell when said at least one cell transitions between said retracted position and said extended position; and

said interface levers said second vane length of said at least one vane causing said second vane length to move while said at least one cell transitions between said retracted position and said extended position.

12. The covering of claim 11 , wherein

said plurality of cells further comprises a first cell having a first cell length and a second cell having a second cell length, wherein

said vane length is longer than said first cell length and said second cell length, such that said at least one vane overlaps said first cell and said second cell.

13. The covering of claim 11 , wherein said vane length encompasses more than one of said plurality of cells.

14. The covering of claim 11 , wherein said vane length extends vertically along said plurality of cells and encompasses more than three cells of said plurality of cells.

15. The covering of claim 11 , wherein said at least one cell is hexagonal in cross section.

16. The covering of claim 11 , wherein said lateral dimension of said interface extends along substantially an entirety of said lateral dimension of said first segment.

17. The covering of claim 11 , wherein said at least one vane is an at least partially rigid material.

18. The fabric of claim 1 wherein said interface extends along substantially an entirety of said lateral dimension of said upper segment.

19. The fabric of claim 1 wherein

said cells are movable between a retracted position and an extended position; and

when said cells are in said extended position, said free end of said vanes abuts against a next adjacent lower vane.

20. The fabric of claim 1 wherein said interface is configured such that said upper segment of each of said cells serves as a lever in moving said vanes unitarily with said upper segment.
