Edge coatings for tapes
View Patent ↗Disclosed is a tape including a substrate having an adhesive layer applied thereto and an edge coating. The substrate and the adhesive together provide at least one masking edge where the edge coating is applied. The edge coating includes a lipophilic agent, a flocculating agent, or combinations thereof. The edge coating provides the tape with enhanced masking ability by preventing paints, varnishes, paint strippers, and other coating compositions from infiltrating the tape substrate or the interface between the tape and an adherend.
1. A tape comprising:
a substrate having an adhesive layer applied to a surface thereof, wherein the substrate and the adhesive layer, together, after slitting, provide at least one cut surface that forms an edge face of the tape; and
an edge coating that has been applied to the edge face of the tape after slitting, the edge coating including a lipophilic agent wherein the lipophilic agent includes at least one of (i) a reaction product of a reaction product of a glyceride and an acrylate polymer or methacrylate polymer, (ii) a lipophilic polyelectrolyte gel, (iii) a polyisobutylene, (iv) a styrenic polymer, (v) a styrenic copolymer, or (vi) a styrenic block copolymer;
wherein the edge coating prevents or reduces the tendency for an applied paint or coating from infiltrating the substrate or the interface between the tape and an adherend.
2. The tape of claim 1 wherein the edge coating is a powder.
3. The tape of claim 2 wherein the particle size of the powder is about 100 m or less.
4. The tape of claim 3 wherein the powder is a granulated alkylene styrene polymer.
5. The tape of claim 1 wherein the lipophilic polyelectrolyte gel is a lipophilic acrylate gel including lipophilic anions and/or cations.
6. The tape of claim 1 wherein the edge coating is applied as an aqueous solution.
7. The tape of claim 1 wherein the edge coating is applied to both edge faces of the tape.
8. The tape of claim 1 wherein the substrate is paper or foil.
9. The tape of claim 1 wherein the adhesive is an acrylic adhesive, a block copolymer adhesive, or a natural rubber adhesive.
10. The tape of claim 1 wherein the edge coating is applied as a solution, a dispersion, or a powder.
11. The tape of claim 1 wherein the edge coating has a dry coating weight of about 0.1 g/m 2 to about 50 g/m 2 .
12. The tape of claim 1 wherein the edge coating further includes a cure additive.
13. The tape of claim 12 wherein the cure additive is selected from the group consisting of an acidic acrylate oligomer, ethylene glycol dimethacrylate, hexamethoxy methyl melamine, n-methylol acrylamide, polyester acrylate oligomer, and combinations thereof.
