Abstract

The deployment method for deploying seismic data acquisition units into shallow water from the deck of a vessel provides for deploying a cable into the water. Seismic data acquisition units are moved from a storage location on the vessel to a position adjacent the cable. In one embodiment, a unit is accelerated to the approximate speed of the cable, at which point the unit is attached to the cable and released into the water. In another embodiment, cable deployment is interrupted while a unit is attached, after which, cable deployment is resumed.

Claims (65)

1. A method for deploying a seismic data collection system in water comprising the steps of:

a. Providing a cable having a first end and a second end;

b. Providing at least one seismic data collection unit adjacent said cable;

c. Deploying the first end of said cable in the water;

d. Paying out said cable into the water at a first velocity;

e. While said cable is paying out into the water, moving said seismic data collection unit along a path adjacent to said cable;

f. Accelerating said seismic data collection unit along said path until it reaches a speed of approximately said first velocity;

g. Attaching said seismic data collection unit to said cable when said cable and said seismic data collection unit are moving at approximately the same velocity; and

h. Releasing said seismic data collection unit attached to said cable into the water.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising the steps of providing a flotation system and attaching said flotation system to one of said ends of said cable.

3. The method of claim 2 , further comprising the steps attaching a flotation system to each end of said cable.

4. A method for deploying a seismic data collection system in water comprising the steps of:

a. providing a cable having a first end and a second end;

b. storing a multiplicity of seismic data collection units in a storage structure adjacent said cable;

c. providing a conveyor extending from a position adjacent said storage structure to a position adjacent said cable;

d. deploying the first end of said cable in the water;

d. paying out said cable into the water at a first velocity;

e. while said cable is paying out into the water, moving a seismic data collection unit along the conveyor from the storage structure to the cable;

f. when said seismic data collection unit is adjacent said cable, interrupting deployment of said cable;

g. attaching said seismic data collection unit to said cable when said cable deployment is interrupted; and

h. after the seismic data collection unit has been attached, resuming deployment of said cable into the water so as to release the attached seismic data collection unit into the water.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein said cable is non-conducting.

6. The method of claim 4 , wherein said cable is rope.

7. The method of claim 4 , wherein interrupting deployment comprises stopping the cable.

8. The method of claim 4 , wherein interrupting deployment comprises altering the velocity of the cable payout.

9. The method of claim 4 , wherein the step of moving an seismic data collection unit from the second location to a position adjacent said cable further comprises:

positioning one or more RFID readers along the conveyor; and

utilizing said RFID readers to track the location of an seismic data collection unit.

10. The method of claim 4 , wherein the step of storing the seismic data collection units comprises downloading data from said seismic data collection units and charging said seismic data collection units.

11. The method of claim 4 , wherein the step of storing the seismic data collection units comprises arranging the seismic data collection units in horizontal rows and vertical columns in said storage structure.

12. A method for deployment of seismic data collection units in water comprising the steps of:

Providing a plurality of seismic data collection units;

Providing a cable having a first end and a second end;

Storing the cable in a first location and storing the seismic data collection units in a second location different from said first location;

Paying out said cable from the first location into the water at a first velocity;

Moving an seismic data collection unit from the second location to a position adjacent said cable;

Interrupting deployment of said cable;

Attaching said seismic data collection unit to the cable when the cable deployment is interrupted; and

After the seismic data collection unit has been attached, resuming deployment of the cable into the water so as to release the attached seismic data collection unit into the water.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein said cable is non-conducting.

14. The method of claim 12 , wherein said cable is rope.

15. The method of claim 12 , wherein interrupting deployment comprises stopping the cable.

16. The method of claim 12 , wherein interrupting deployment comprises altering the velocity of the cable payout.

17. The method of claim 12 , wherein the step of moving an seismic data collection unit from the second location to a position adjacent said cable further comprises:

positioning one or more RFID readers along a travel path between said second location and said attachment position; and

utilizing said RFID readers to track the location of an seismic data collection unit.

18. The method of claim 12 , wherein the step of storing the seismic data collection units comprises downloading data from said seismic data collection units and charging said seismic data collection units.

19. The method of claim 12 , wherein the step of storing the seismic data collection units comprises arranging the seismic data collection units in horizontal rows and vertical columns at said second location.

20. A method for deployment of seismic data collection units in water comprising the steps of:

Providing a plurality of seismic data collection units;

Providing a cable having a first end and a second end;

Storing the cable in a first location and storing the seismic data collection units in a second location different from said first location;

Paying out said cable from the first location into the water at a first velocity;

Moving an seismic data collection unit from the second location to a position adjacent said cable;

Attaching said seismic data collection unit to the cable when the cable deployment is interrupted; and

Releasing the attached seismic data collection unit into the water.

21. The method of claim 20 , wherein said cable is non-conducting.

22. The method of claim 20 , wherein said cable is rope.

23. The method of claim 20 , wherein the step of moving an seismic data collection unit from the second location to a position adjacent said cable further comprises:

positioning one or more RFID readers along a travel path between said second location and said attachment position; and
