Abstract

An enhanced light fixture containing a volumetric diffuser to control the spatial luminance uniformity and angular spread of light from the light fixture is disclosed. The volumetric diffuser provides increased spatial luminance uniformity and efficient control over the illuminance such that power reductions, reduced cost or reduced size may be achieved. The volumetric diffuser contains one or more regions of volumetric light scattering particles. The spread of illumination of light from a light emitting source can be efficiently controlled by using a thin, low cost, volumetric, diffuser to direct the light in the desired direction. This allows the reduction in number of light sources, a reduction in power requirements, or a more tailored illumination. When the volumetric diffuser is used in combination with a waveguide to extract light, the light is efficiently coupled out of the waveguide in a thin, planar surface. This transmissive diffuser can be coupled to a reflecting element such that the resulting combination is a light reflecting element with a desired light scattering profile.

Claims (18)

1. An apparatus comprising:

a) a first light emitting source;

b) a first light input surface disposed to receive light from the first light emitting source;

c) a first light output surface through which a first portion of light emitted from the first light emitting source exits the apparatus in a first light output profile;

d) a first volumetric light scattering region comprising the first dispersed phase domain material of refractive index n p and a first continuous phase material of refractive index n m wherein |n m −n p |>0.001;

e) a volumetric light transmitting region comprising the first volumetric light scattering region and disposed to receive light from the first light emitting source wherein a first curved portion of the first volumetric light scattering region is curved in shape within a first cross-sectional plane orthogonal to the first light output surface; wherein the integrated transmission of the volumetric light transmitting region is greater than 90% as measured by ASTM D1003.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 in which the optical efficiency of the apparatus is greater than 80%.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the integrated Correlated Color Temperature of the apparatus is at least 100 K less than the integrated correlated color temperature of the light source output.

4. The apparatus of claim 3 in which the light source is comprised of one or more light emitting diodes.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the optical axis of light exiting the volumetric light transmitting region is substantially aligned with and enters the acceptance angle for transmission through a refractive surface structure.

6. The apparatus of claim 5 in which the refractive surface structure is a prism.

7. The apparatus of claim 5 in which the light output is significantly collimated compared to the fixture without the refractive surface structure.

8. The apparatus of claim 1 in which the continuous phase material of the light scattering region is acrylic.

9. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the volumetric light transmitting region has a tapered shape within the first cross-sectional plane.

10. The apparatus of claim 1 further comprising a second light scattering region.

11. The apparatus of claim 10 wherein the second light scattering region is separated from the first volumetric light scattering region by a substantially non-scattering region.

12. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the first light emitting source comprises a first light source output surface wherein the first light source output surface is optically coupled to the volumetric light transmitting region.

13. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein an asymmetric light distribution is produced.
