Abstract

Embodiments of the present invention are related to a method and device for the determination and calculation of the depth of chest compressions during the administration of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Embodiments use an optical sensor to monitor the distance that a victim's chest is displaced during each compression throughout the administration of CPR. The optical sensor is most commonly an image sensor such as a CMOS or CCD sensor, and more specifically a CMOS image sensor capable of three-dimensional imaging based on the time-of-flight principle. An infrared emitter may illuminate the victim's body and any visible piece of ground beside the victim. As the infrared light interacts with any surfaces it encounters, it is reflected and returns to the image sensor where the time of flight of the infrared light is calculated for every pixel in the image sensor. The distance data is used to gauge the effective displacement of the victim's chest. The optical sensors can be used to visualize the size of a patient and immediately gauge the body type and instruct the user accordingly. Furthermore, optical measurement techniques can be used to accurately measure chest rise during artificial respiration and ensure that proper ventilation is being administered in between compressions. In addition, optical measurements of the chest of the victim and the hands of the rescuer can be used to help ensure that the rescuer has positioned his or her hands in the anatomically correct location for effective CPR.

Claims (21)

1. A device for monitoring chest compressions during the administration of cardiopulmonary resuscitation to a patient, comprising:

a three-dimensional image optical sensor attached to a wrist band configured to be worn around a wrist of a rescuer administering cardiopulmonary resuscitation to the patient, the optical sensor configured to sense a distance, for a plurality of pixels of the optical sensor, between the optical sensor and an object in an environment surrounding the optical sensor, the distance sensed throughout motion of a chest compression administered by the rescuer during cardiopulmonary resuscitation and the object in the environment monitored for changes that are related to the depth of the administered chest compressions, the optical sensor positioned to move with the motion of the chest compression;

processing circuitry configured to receive the sensed distance from optical sensor and further configured to:

generate a depth map from the sensed distance between the optical sensor and the object in the environment of the sensor; and

extract depth information of the chest compression based on the depth map.

2. The device of claim 1 , wherein the image optical sensor uses time-of-flight measurement to sense the distance between the optical sensor and the object in the environment of the sensor for the plurality of pixels.

3. The device of claim 1 , wherein the processing circuitry is integrated into the optical sensor.

4. The device of claim 1 , wherein the processing circuitry is integrated into the wrist band.

5. The device of claim 1 , wherein the the wrist band is configured to be worn around a forearm or upper arm of the rescuer.

6. The device of claim 1 , wherein the optical sensor comprises a CMOS sensor.

7. The device of claim 1 wherein the optical sensor comprises a three dimensional time-of flight image sensor.

8. The device of claim 1 , further comprising an illumination source that is positioned adjacent to the optical sensor.

9. The device of claim 8 , wherein the illumination source includes infrared light emitting diodes.

10. The device of claim 1 further comprising a feedback mechanism coupled to the processing circuitry, the feedback mechanism configured to transmit feedback information about the chest compressions to a rescuer administering cardiopulmonary resuscitation to the patient.

11. The device of claim 10 , wherein the feedback information comprises visual feedback information.

12. The device of claim 10 , wherein the feedback mechanism includes a computer.

13. The device of claim 1 , in which the depth map includes a compression gradient.

14. The device of claim 13 , in which the compression gradient includes a contour map of the patient's body, the contour map originating at the site of the chest compression and radiating outward.

15. The device of claim 5 , wherein the wrist band is configured to be worn around the forearm of the rescuer so that the optical sensor is positioned on a posterior surface of the forearm of the rescuer.

16. The device of claim 15 , wherein the object in the environment of the optical sensor is a non-moving surface selected by the optical sensor.

17. The device of claim 1 , wherein the optical sensor comprises a CCD sensor.
