Abstract

A fiber optic cable includes at least one optical fiber, at least one strength member, armor components, and a cable jacket. The cable jacket has a cavity with a generally rectangular cross-section with the armor components disposed on opposite sides of the cavity.

Claims (31)

1. A fiber optic cable comprising:

a cable jacket, the cable jacket having two major surfaces that are generally flat and a cavity, the cavity having a cavity minor dimension smaller than the major dimension that is generally oriented with a minor dimension of the cable jacket;

a pair of strength members having a strength member dimension D, one strength member being disposed at each end of the cavity;

a first generally flat armor component on one side of the cavity;

a second armor component separated from the first armor component and on a side of the cavity opposite to the first armor component; and

at least one optical fiber, wherein

the at least one optical fiber is disposed within the cavity.

2. The fiber optic cable of claim 1 , wherein the armor components are wholly embedded in the cable jacket.

3. The fiber optic cable of claim 2 , wherein the cavity is generally rectangular.

4. The fiber optic cable of claim 2 , wherein the minor dimension of the fiber optic cable is about 10 millimeters or less and a major dimension of the fiber optic cable is about 15 millimeters or less.

5. The fiber optic cable of claim 2 , wherein at least one of the armor components comprises a generally flat steel tape.

6. The fiber optic cable of claim 2 , wherein at least one of the armor components comprises a generally flat polymer.

7. The fiber optic cable of claim 2 , wherein the second armor component is generally flat.

8. The fiber optic cable of claim 3 , wherein the minor dimension of the fiber optic cable is about 10 millimeters or less and a major dimension of the fiber optic cable is about 15 millimeters or less.

9. A fiber optic cable comprising:

a cable jacket, the cable jacket having two major surfaces that are generally flat and a cavity, the cavity having a cavity minor dimension smaller than the major dimension that is generally oriented with a minor dimension of the cable jacket;

a pair of strength members having a strength member dimension D, one strength member being disposed at each end of the cavity;

a first armor component on one side of the cavity and wholly embedded in the jacket;

a second armor component separated from the first armor component and on a side of the cavity opposite to the first armor component and wholly embedded in the jacket; and

at least one optical fiber, wherein

the at least one optical fiber is disposed within the cavity, and

wherein the armor components are corrugated.

10. The fiber optic cable of claim 9 , wherein the minor dimension of the fiber optic cable is about 10 millimeters or less and a major dimension of the fiber optic cable is about 15 millimeters or less.

11. A fiber optic cable comprising:

a cable jacket and a generally rectangular cavity, the cavity having a cavity minor dimension smaller than the major dimension that is generally oriented with a minor dimension of the cable jacket;

a pair of strength members, one strength member being disposed at each end of the cavity;

a first generally flat armor component on one side of the cavity;

a second generally flat armor component separated from the first armor component and on a side of the cavity opposite to the first armor component; and

at least one optical fiber ribbon disposed within the cavity.

12. The fiber optic cable of claim 11 , wherein the armor components are wholly embedded in the cable jacket.

13. The fiber optic cable of claim 12 , the minor dimension of the fiber optic cable being about 10 millimeters or less and a major dimension of the fiber optic cable being about 15 millimeters or less.
