Abstract

A printing system with a print zone where droplets of ink print onto media, a drive roller configured to translate the media into the print zone and a movable media engagement assembly for vacuum engagement of one side of the media to draw the media away from the print zone.

Claims (20)

1. A printing system comprising:

a print zone where droplets of ink print onto media;

a pagewidth printhead assembly that is fixed relative to the print zone when printing the media, the pagewidth printhead assembly comprising a plurality of printheads positioned in a staggered arrangement spanning across a width of a media path;

a fixed vacuum platen positioned in the print zone and spaced from the pagewidth printhead assembly;

a drive roller positioned upstream of the print zone, the drive roller being configured to translate the media into the print zone; and,

a vacuum belt assembly positioned downstream only of the print zone for translating the media away from the print zone, the vacuum belt assembly comprising a plurality of individual movable belts and a vacuum chamber for drawing the print media onto the belts,

wherein the vacuum platen comprises a plurality of embedded independently rotatable service modules that are each aligned with a corresponding one of the printheads, each of the service modules comprising a vacuum platen face.

2. A printing system according to claim 1 wherein the drive roller, the print zone and the vacuum belt assembly are positioned such that the media is engaged by the drive roller but not the vacuum belt assembly during a first time period.

3. A printing system according to claim 2 wherein the vacuum belt assembly and the drive roller are configured to simultaneously engage the media during a second time period.

4. A printing system according to claim 3 wherein the media slips relative to the vacuum belts during the second time period.

5. A printing system according to claim 3 wherein the media is engaged by the vacuum belt assembly but not the drive roller during a third time period.

6. A printing system according to claim 5 further comprising a media sensor configured to provide timing signals for operative control of the pagewidth printhead assembly.

7. A printing system according to claim 6 wherein the timing signals are provided during a first time interval, the first time interval spans an end portion of the first time period, all the second time period, and an initial portion of the third time period.

8. A printing system according to claim 5 wherein drive roller is configured to impart a first translation speed onto the print media during the first and second time periods and the vacuum belt assembly is configured to impart a second translation speed onto the print media during the third time period, wherein the second translation speed is greater than the first translation speed.

9. A printing system according to claim 6 wherein the media sensor is a media encoder embedded within the fixed vacuum platen.

10. A printing system according to claim 9 wherein the media encoder is positioned to engage media between two of the printheads.

11. A printing system according to claim 10 wherein the media encoder is positioned to engage the media proximate an upstream side of the print zone.

12. A printing system according to claim 10 further comprising a scanner adjacent the vacuum belt assembly to capture information from the media for feedback control of the pagewidth printhead assembly.

13. A printing system according to claim 12 wherein the information captured by the scanner is used to align the printheads.

14. A printing system according to claim 1 wherein the plurality of service modules are each configured to cross the media path to engage the printhead during a capping or servicing operation.
