Abstract

A printing system that has a printhead assembly for printing media fed along a media path and a plurality of service modules for the printhead assembly. Each of the service modules is configured to operate in a plurality of different modes and each of the service modules are independently operable.

Claims (20)

1. A printing system comprising:

a fixed printhead assembly for printing media fed along a media path, the printhead assembly having a plurality of printheads positioned to span the media path;

a fixed vacuum platen positioned opposite the printhead assembly, the fixed vacuum platen having a plurality of apertures defined therein corresponding to the plurality of printheads;

a plurality of service modules for the printhead assembly, each of the service modules being disposed in one of the apertures respectively for servicing one of the printheads respectively, each service module comprising a rotatable carousel and a plurality of different service stations mounted about the carousel;

a plurality of rotation mechanisms corresponding to the plurality of service modules, each rotation mechanism being configured for rotating a respective carousel,

relative to the fixed vacuum platen so as to present a selected one of the plurality of different service stations to a respective printhead; and

a plurality of lift mechanisms corresponding to the plurality of service modules, each lift mechanism being configured for slidably lifting a respective carousel towards a respective printhead,

wherein at least one service station extends proud of the fixed vacuum platen in a lifted position and retracts within a respective aperture in a retracted position.

2. The printing system according to claim 1 wherein one of the service stations is a vacuum platen module corresponding to a platen mode.

3. The printing system according to claim 1 wherein one of the service stations is a capper corresponding a capping mode.

4. The printing system according to claim 1 further comprising:

a drive roller configured to engage and push media into a print zone; and,

a movable media engagement assembly configured to engage one side of the media and pull the media while the drive roller remains engaged with the media.

5. The printing system according to claim 4 wherein the movable media engagement assembly has an apertured surface that has a media engagement side and low pressure region at a side opposite the media engagement side.

6. The printing system according to claim 5 wherein the movable media engagement assembly has a vacuum belt configured to receive the media from the print zone.

7. The printing system according to claim 6 wherein during use a leading edge of the media traverses from the drive roller to the vacuum belt during the first time period.

8. The printing system according to claim 7 wherein the drive roller is configured to control a media translation speed until the media disengages from the drive roller.

9. The printing system according to claim 8 wherein the vacuum belt is configured to control the media transport speed subsequent to disengagement of the media from the drive roller.

10. The printing system according to claim 1 further comprising a media encoder positioned in the fixed vacuum platen and configured to produce timing signals for operating the printhead assembly.

11. The printing system according to claim 1 wherein one of the service stations is a wiper corresponding to a wiping mode.
