Abstract

A wide format printer that has a drive roller configured to engage and push media into a print zone and a movable media engagement assembly configured to engage one side of the media and pull the media while the drive roller remains engaged with the media wherein the print zone is more than 432 mm (17 inches) wide.

Claims (27)

1. A printer comprising:

a fixed printhead assembly defining a print zone;

a drive roller configured to engage and push media continuously through the print zone, the drive roller being positioned upstream of the print zone; and

one or more movable belts positioned downstream only of the print zone for receiving media from the print zone,

a vacuum blower for pulling one side of the media onto the moveable belts; and

a controller for coordinating a vacuum pressure of the vacuum blower, a belt speed of the moveable belts and a drive roller speed,

wherein the controller is configured to control the belt speed and the drive roller speed such that the belt speed is marginally higher than the drive roller speed; and

wherein the controller is configured to control the vacuum pressure such that the drive roller engages the media more strongly than the moveable belts.

2. The printer according to claim 1 wherein during use a leading edge of the media traverses from the drive roller to the moveable belts during a first time period.

3. The printer according to claim 2 wherein the drive roller is configured to control a media transport speed until the media disengages from the drive roller.

4. The printer according to claim 3 wherein the moveable belts are configured to control the media transport speed subsequent to disengagement of the media from the drive roller.

5. The printer according to claim 1 further comprising:

a fixed vacuum platen for supporting print media in the print zone; and

a media encoder positioned in the fixed vacuum platen and configured to produce timing signals for operating the printhead assembly.

6. The printer according to claim 5 wherein the printhead assembly overlays the fixed vacuum platen and spans the print zone.

7. The printer according to claim 5 wherein the media encoder is configured to provide the timing signals while engaged with the print media.

8. A printer according to claim 5 wherein the media encoder is embedded within the fixed vacuum platen.

9. A printer according to claim 1 , wherein the printer is a wide format printer having a print zone more than 432 mm wide.

10. A method of printing comprising the steps of:

engaging a first part of a print medium with a drive roller positioned upstream of a print zone;

simultaneously engaging a second part of the print medium with one or more moving vacuum belts positioned downstream only of the print zone, the drive roller engaging the print medium more strongly than the moving vacuum belts;

feeding the print medium through the print zone using the drive roller and the moving vacuum belts; and

printing onto the print medium using a fixed printhead assembly positioned in the print zone,

wherein a belt speed of the moving vacuum belts is marginally higher than a drive roller speed, such that the print medium slips relative to the moving vacuum belts until the print medium disengages from the drive roller.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein a media transport speed matches the drive roller speed until the print medium disengages from the drive roller.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the media transport speed matches the belt speed only when a trailing edge of the print medium has disengaged from the drive roller.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein a timing signal for the printhead is adjusted when the trailing edge of the print medium has disengaged from the drive roller.
