Abstract

Embodiments are directed to portable infusion devices, systems, and methods of using the same for dispensing materials. In some cases, the devices, systems and methods may be used for infusing a material such as medicament, e.g., insulin, into a body in need thereof.

Claims (22)

1. A portable infusion pump kit for delivering a therapeutic fluid to a patient, comprising:

a first portable, user-wearable pump device including a first housing and a first drive mechanism;

a second portable, user-wearable pump device comprising a second housing and a second drive mechanism; and

a common infusion cartridge comprising:

a fluid reservoir configured to be filled with a volume of the therapeutic fluid sufficient for a prolonged single infusion protocol; and

a delivery mechanism having a distal end in fluid communication with an interior volume of the fluid reservoir and a proximal end configured to couple to either the first drive mechanism or the second drive mechanism and be translated between a plurality of positions to deliver the therapeutic fluid to the patient,

wherein the common infusion cartridge is configured to be interchangeably coupled to and alternated between the first pump device and the second pump device without sterilizing the cartridge during the single infusion protocol with the common infusion cartridge of the therapeutic fluid to the patient.

2. The kit of claim 1 wherein the first pump device has more user features than the second pump device and wherein the infusion cartridge may be switched from one pump device to the other without compromising the sterility of the fluid disposed within the interior volume of the reservoir.

3. The kit of claim 2 wherein the first pump device includes a GUI and the second pump device does not include a GUI.

4. The kit of claim 1 wherein the first pump device and second pump device are configured such that the first pump device may be used to control or program at least some fluid delivery parameters of the second pump device.

5. The kit of claim 4 wherein the first pump device can communicate fluid delivery parameter data wirelessly to the second pump device.

6. The kit of claim 1 wherein the therapeutic fluid comprises insulin.

7. A method of delivering a therapeutic fluid to a patient, comprising:

providing a first portable, user-wearable pump device having a user interface;

installing a disposable infusion cartridge on the first pump device for delivering an infusion protocol; and

removing the disposable infusion cartridge from the first pump device and installing the disposable infusion cartridge onto a second portable, user-wearable pump device to continue the infusion protocol with the second pump device while maintaining the sterility of the fluid disposed within a reservoir of the disposable infusion cartridge without sterilizing the cartridge between removing the cartridge from the first pump device and installing the cartridge on the second pump device.

8. The method of claim 7 wherein the first pump device comprises a full featured pump device.

9. The method of claim 7 further comprising controlling one or more fluid delivery parameters of the second pump device with commands entered by a user on the first pump device and a signal from the first pump device to the second pump device.

10. The method of claim 9 wherein the signal from the first pump device to the second pump device is a wireless signal.

11. The method of claim 7 further comprising coupling an output port of the disposable cartridge to a subcutaneous position within a patient's body and maintaining, this coupling during removal of the disposable infusion cartridge from the first pump device and installation of the disposable infusion cartridge onto the second pump device.

12. The method of claim 7 wherein the first pump device includes a processor and memory device configured to store therapeutic fluid historical delivery data regarding past delivery of therapeutic fluid to the patient and wherein at least a portion of said historical delivery data is transferred from the first pump device to the second pump device.

13. The method of claim 7 wherein the therapeutic fluid Comprises insulin.
