Abstract

A backlight assembly capable of reducing light loss is presented. The backlight assembly includes a plurality of substrate units and a plurality of reflective members on the substrate units arranged to form an adjacent area where two reflective members are closest to each other. The adjacent area is on one of the substrate units. A display device incorporating the backlight assembly is also presented.

Claims (43)

1. A backlight assembly comprising:

a plurality of coplanar and spaced apart substrate units; and

a plurality of coplanar and spaced apart reflective members each respectively disposed on a respective one of the substrate units,

wherein a respective second gap having a corresponding second gap dimension is formed between a respective first edge of the corresponding first one of the substrate units and a counterfacing next edge of the adjacent and next one of the substrate units, the corresponding second gap dimension being greater than the corresponding first gap dimension;

wherein at least one of the reflective members is larger in area of extent than that of its corresponding one of the substrate units, and

wherein at least one of the reflective members is not larger in area of extent than that of its corresponding one of the substrate units.

2. The backlight assembly of claim 1 , wherein

at least one of the reflective members which is larger in area of extent than that of its corresponding one of the substrate units covers part of the corresponding and adjacent next one of the substrate units.

3. The backlight assembly of claim 2 , wherein at least one of the reflective members is coupled to its corresponding one of the substrate units by a coupling member, where the coupling member extends into a neighboring area to further couple a next one of the reflective members to its corresponding next one of the substrate units.

4. The backlight assembly of claim 3 , wherein the coupling member has a surface that covers the neighboring area.

5. The backlight assembly of claim 2 , wherein the neighboring area includes a gap between the substrate units.

6. The backlight assembly of claim 1 , wherein the substrate units each have a same size.

7. The backlight assembly of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the reflective members covers multiple substrate units.

8. The backlight assembly of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the substrate units has a light source thereon and at least one of the reflective members has a cutout for exposing the light source.

9. The backlight assembly of claim 1 , wherein some of the reflective members overlap each other.

10. The backlight assembly of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the reflective members has a non-rectangular polygonal shape.

11. The backlight assembly of claim 1 , wherein a number of substrate units is the same as a number of reflective members.

12. The backlight assembly of claim 1 , wherein each substrate unit is coated with a reflective material.

13. A backlight assembly comprising:

a plurality of coplanar and spaced apart substrate units; and

a plurality of coplanar and spaced apart reflective members disposed on the substrate units,

wherein a respective first gap having a corresponding first gap dimension is formed between a respective first edge of a given first one of the reflective members and a counterfacing next edge of an adjacent next one of the reflective members, the first one of the reflective members being disposed on a corresponding first one of the substrate units and the next one of the reflective members being disposed on a corresponding and adjacent next one of the substrate units; and

wherein each respective first gap is disposed over only a single one of the corresponding first and corresponding and adjacent next one of the substrate units.

14. The backlight assembly of claim 13 , wherein at least one of the reflective members covers multiple substrate units.

15. The backlight assembly of claim 13 , wherein at least one of the reflective members is coupled to its corresponding one of the substrate units by a coupling member, where the coupling member extends into a neighboring area to further couple a next one of the reflective members to its corresponding next one of the substrate units.

16. The backlight assembly of claim 13 , wherein the reflective members are of different sizes from the substrate units.

17. The backlight assembly of claim 13 , wherein at least one of the substrate units has a light source thereon and at least one of the reflective members has a cutout for exposing the light source.

18. The backlight assembly of claim 13 , wherein a first adjacent edge of one of the reflective members forms an oblique angle relative to a second adjacent edge of the reflective member.

19. The backlight assembly of claim 13 , wherein the number of substrate units is the same as the number of reflective members.

20. The backlight assembly of claim 13 , wherein the number of substrate units is different from the number of reflective members.

21. The backlight assembly of claim 13 , wherein each substrate unit is coated with a reflective material.

22. A backlight assembly comprising:

a plurality of coplanar and spaced apart substrate units arranged next to one another; and

a plurality of coplanar and spaced apart reflective members,

wherein a respective first gap having a corresponding first gap dimension is formed between a respective first edge of a given first one of the reflective members and a counterfacing next edge of an adjacent next one of the reflective members, the first one of the reflective members being disposed on a corresponding first one of the substrate units and the next one of the reflective members being disposed on a corresponding and adjacent next one of the substrate units;

the plurality of reflective members being arranged on the substrate units such that adjacent edges of adjacent ones of the reflective members are both disposed on a shared one of their corresponding first and adjacent next one of the substrate units.

23. A display device comprising:

a panel that is configured to display images; and

a backlight assembly coupled to the panel, wherein the backlight assembly is configured to provide light to the panel, the backlight assembly including:

a plurality of coplanar and spaced apart substrate units; and

a plurality of coplanar and spaced apart reflective members disposed on the substrate units and arranged to define respective areas of adjacency where corresponding edges of a corresponding two neighboring reflective members are closest to each other, a spacing between the corresponding edges forming a gap in the plane of the reflective members;
