Abstract

A method for mating optical fibers, a fiber optic connector, and a fiber optic subassembly are provided in which mating fibers have angled end faces joined by index matching fluid, but in which the angled end faces of the fibers are positioned relative to one another in rotationally misaligned relationship. Applicants discovered unexpectedly that optical fibers can be spliced, to provide satisfactory optical connections, without the need for matched cleaves, and without the need for precise rotational alignment of the cleaves, provided that angled end faces are provided on both the launch and receive fibers and that index matching gel is provided between the angled end faces. Thus, the fibers are mated in positions other than in the precise rotationally aligned position previously believed essential to adequate optical performance. Angled end faces may be positioned less than 165 degrees out of phase.

Claims (33)

1. A method for mating optical fibers, the method comprising:

angle cleaving a first optical fiber to provide a launch fiber having an angled end face;

angle cleaving a second optical fiber to provide a receive fiber having a respective angled end face;

applying index matching fluid adjacent one of said angled end faces;

positioning said angled end faces in close and rotationally misaligned relationship with index matching fluid therebetween; and

securing at least one of said first and second optical fibers to maintain rotational misalignment between said angled end faces.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein angle cleaving at least one of said first and second optical fibers comprises mechanical cleaving.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein said angle cleaving at least one of said first and second optical fibers comprises mechanical polishing.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein said mechanical polishing is used to provide one of a substantially flat angled end face and a chamfered angled end face.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein angle cleaving at least one of said first and second optical fibers comprises laser cleaving.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein said laser cleaving is used to produce one of a chamfered angled end face and a radiused angled end face.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein said positioning said angled end faces in close and rotationally misaligned relationship comprises positioning said angled end faces such that said angled end faces are rotationally positioned about a common optical axis less than 165 degrees out of phase.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein said positioning said angled end faces in close and rotationally misaligned relationship comprises positioning said angled end faces such that said angled end faces are rotationally positioned about a common optical axis less than 150 degrees out of phase.

9. A fiber optic connector comprising:

a housing;

a ferrule having a distal end, the ferrule being supported on the housing;

a fiber stub secured in the ferrule, the fiber stub having a first end adjacent the ferrule's distal end and a second end positioned proximally of the distal end, the second end having an angled end face;

a mating optical fiber secured to the housing, the mating optical fiber having a respective angled end face positioned in close and rotationally misaligned relationship with said angled end face of said fiber stub to form a splice; and

index matching fluid positioned between said angled end faces of said fiber stub and said mating optical fiber.

10. The fiber optic connector of claim 9 , wherein said fiber stub and said mating optical fiber have matched angled end faces.

11. The fiber optic connector of claim 9 , wherein said fiber stub and said mating optical fiber have mismatched angled end faces that have dissimilar angular end face configurations.

12. The fiber optic connector of claim 9 , wherein said angled end faces are rotationally positioned less than 165 degrees out of phase about a common optical axis.

13. The fiber optic connector of claim 9 , wherein said angled end faces are rotationally positioned less than 150 degrees out of phase about a common optical axis.

14. The fiber optic connector of claim 9 , wherein said ferrule is a multi-fiber ferrule, and wherein said connector further comprises a plurality of fiber stubs secured in the ferrule, and a plurality of mating optical fibers secured to the housing, wherein each mating optical fiber has a respective angled end face positioned in close and rotationally misaligned relationship with a respective angled end face of a respective fiber stub to form a splice, with index matching fluid positioned therebetween.

15. A fiber optic subassembly comprising:

a housing;

first and second optical fibers supported on the housing, each fiber having an angled end face for forming an optical connection; and

index matching fluid; wherein

the angled end faces of the first and second fibers are positioned in close and rotationally misaligned relationship, with index matching fluid positioned therebetween to form an optical connection between said first and second optical fibers.

16. The fiber optic subassembly of claim 15 , wherein said angled end faces are mismatched in that they have dissimilar angular end face configurations.

17. The fiber optic subassembly of claim 15 , wherein said angled end faces are rotationally positioned less than 165 degrees out of phase about a common optical axis.

18. The fiber optic subassembly of claim 17 , wherein said angled end faces are rotationally positioned less than 150 degrees out of phase about a common optical axis.

19. The method of claim 1 , wherein positioning said angled end faces in close and rotationally misaligned relationship comprises rotationally misaligning said first and second optical fibers in random fashion.
