Abstract

This disclosure describes stereoscopic flat panel display systems based on the polarization encoding of sequentially displayed left and right eye images. The systems comprise line-by-line addressed liquid crystal display (LCD) panels, illuminating back light units and polarization control panels (PCPs). Right and left eye images are written sequentially onto the LCD whose polarization is controlled by a substantially synchronously driven PCP. The backlight may be continuously illuminated, or modulated temporally, spatially or both, as can the PCP.

Claims (38)

1. A method of displaying stereoscopic imagery on a flat panel display, the display having a backlight with a plurality of backlight illuminating segments operable to selectively provide light to a liquid crystal (LC) modulation panel, the LC modulation panel having LC modulation regions operable to modulate the light incident from the backlight, and a polarization control panel (PCP) operable to switch temporally between 1) transforming a state of polarization (SOP) of the modulated light incident from the LC modulation panel to a first SOP corresponding to one of a left eye image mode or a right eye image mode; and 2) transmitting the modulated light incident from the LC modulation panel with a second SOP corresponding to the other of the left eye or right eye image mode, the method comprising:

controlling the PCP with one of left eye and right eye polarization control signals;

providing the light to selected LC modulation regions from selected backlight illuminating segments, wherein the selected LC modulation regions comprise sufficiently settled modulation regions operating in an image mode corresponding to the one of left eye polarization control signals and right eye polarization control signals; and

switching from controlling the PCP with the one of left eye and right eye polarization control signals to the other of the left eye and right eye polarization control signals, wherein during the switching, the backlight illuminating segments are not providing light.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising addressing the LC modulation panel by addressing data lines of the LC modulation regions in a substantially continuous line-by-line manner.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein controlling the PCP comprises controlling the PCP with left eye polarization control signals, and wherein providing the light comprises providing the light to settled LC modulation regions of the LC modulation panel presenting left eye image data.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein controlling the PCP with left eye polarization control signals further comprises instructing the PCP to transform the SOP of the light such that a right-eye analyzer would block the light.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the switching occurs after the LC modulation regions are settled.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the switching occurs while latter data lines of a bottom LC modulation region of the LC modulation panel are settling.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein an entire left eye or right eye frame is addressed within 1/120 second.

8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising sequentially turning off adjacent backlight illuminating segments after corresponding LC modulation regions are addressed.

9. The method of claim 1 , further comprising turning on each of the backlight illuminating segments after the LC modulation regions are settled.

10. A flat panel display operable to display stereoscopic imagery, comprising:

a backlight with a plurality of backlight illuminating segments operable to selectively provide light;

a liquid crystal (LC) modulation panel receiving the light from the backlight, the LC modulation panel having LC modulation regions operable to modulate the light incident from the backlight; and

a polarization control panel (PCP) operable to switch temporally between 1) transforming state of polarization (SOP) of the modulated light incident from the LC modulation panel to a first SOP corresponding to one of a left eye image mode or a right eye image mode; and 2) transmitting the modulated light incident form the LC modulation panel with a second SOP corresponding to the other of the left eye or right eye image mode;

wherein the PCP is controlled with one of left eye and right eye polarization control signals,

wherein the light is provided to selected LC modulation regions of the LC modulation panel from selected backlight illuminating segments, the selected LC modulation regions comprising sufficiently settled modulation regions operating in an image mode corresponding to the one of left eye polarization control signals and right eye polarization control signals, and

wherein the PCP is switched from being controlled with the one of left eye and right eye polarization control signals to the other of the left eye and right eye polarization control signals, and wherein during the switching, the backlight illuminating segments are not providing light.

11. The panel of claim 10 , wherein the LC modulation panel is addressed by addressing data lines of the LC modulation regions in a substantially continuous line-by-line manner.

12. The panel of claim 10 , wherein the PCP is controlled with left eye polarization control signals and wherein light is provided to settled LC modulation regions presenting left eye image data.

13. The panel of claim 12 , wherein the PCP is controlled with left eye polarization control signals instructing the PCP to transform the SOP of the light such that a right-eye analyzer would block the light.

14. The method of claim 10 , wherein the switching occurs after the LC modulation regions are settled.

15. The method of claim 10 , wherein the switching occurs while latter data lines of a bottom LC modulation region are settling.

16. The panel of claim 10 , wherein an entire left eye or right eye frame is addressed within 1/120 second.

17. The panel of claim 10 , wherein adjacent backlight illuminating segments are sequentially turned off after corresponding LC modulation regions are addressed.

18. The panel of claim 10 , wherein the backlight illuminating segments are turned on after the LC modulation regions are settled.

19. A method of displaying stereoscopic imagery on a display, the display having a backlight with a plurality of backlight illuminating segments operable to selectively provide light to a liquid crystal (LC) modulation panel, the LC modulation panel having LC modulation regions operable to modulate the light incident from the backlight, and a polarization control panel (PCP) operable to switch temporally between 1) providing output modulated light having a first state of polarization (SOP) corresponding to one of a left eye image mode or a right eye image mode; and 2) providing output modulated light having a second SOP corresponding to the other of the left eye or right eye image mode, the method comprising:
