Abstract

A spinal implant may be used to stabilize a portion of a spine. The implant may promote bone growth between adjacent vertebrae that fuses the vertebrae together. An implant may include an opening through a height of a body of the implant. The body of the implant may include curved sides. A top and/or a bottom of the implant may include protrusions that contact and/or engage vertebral surfaces to prevent backout of the implant from the disc space. A variety of instruments may be used to prepare a disc space and insert an implant. The instruments may include, but are not limited to, a distracter, a rasp, and one or more guides. The implant and instruments may be supplied in an instrument kit.

Claims (58)

a bottom extending between the distal end and the proximal end opposite the top, wherein at least a portion of the bottom is shaped to contact a second vertebra, wherein the second vertebra is adjacent to the first vertebra;

an anterior side extending between said top and said bottom and having:

a first curvature between the distal end and the proximal end of said spinal implant;

and

a first groove located on the first curvature near said proximal end and

extending from and passing through said top to said bottom;

a posterior side extending between the top and the bottom opposite said anterior side and having:

a second curvature between said distal end and said proximal end of said spinal implant; and

a second groove located on the second curvature near said proximal end and extending from and passing through said top to said bottom; and

an opening extending through the spinal implant from the top to the bottom.

2. The spinal implant of claim 1 , wherein the distal end is tapered.

3. The spinal implant of claim 1 , wherein the distal end is curved.

4. The spinal implant of claim 1 , wherein the first curvature and the second curvature are in substantially the same direction.

5. The spinal implant of claim 1 , wherein the first curvature has approximately the same radius of curvature as the second curvature.

6. The spinal implant of claim 1 , wherein the top comprises protrusions configured to contact the first vertebra, and wherein at least two of the protrusions differ in height, shape, or both.

7. The spinal implant of claim 1 , wherein the top comprises protrusions configured to contact the first vertebra, and wherein the protrusions are in a radial pattern.

8. The spinal implant of claim 1 , wherein the top comprises protrusions configured to contact the first vertebra, and wherein a first spacing between a first pair of adjacent protrusions differs from a second spacing between a second pair of adjacent protrusions.

9. The spinal implant of claim 1 , wherein the bottom comprises protrusions configured to contact the second vertebra, and wherein at least two of the protrusions differ in height, shape, or both.

10. The spinal implant of claim 1 , wherein the bottom comprises protrusions configured to contact the second vertebra, and wherein the protrusions are in a radial pattern.

11. The spinal implant of claim 1 , wherein the bottom comprises protrusions configured to contact the second vertebra, and wherein a first spacing between a first pair of adjacent protrusions differs from a second spacing between a second pair of adjacent protrusions.

12. The spinal implant of claim 1 , wherein an inner surface of the anterior side and the inner surface of the posterior side each comprises one or more projections extending into the opening, and wherein the one or more projections are configured to strengthen the implant.

13. The spinal implant of claim 1 , wherein said first groove and said second groove are located substantially equidistant from said proximal end.

14. The spinal implant of claim 1 , wherein the grooves are configured to engage an insertion instrument.

15. The spinal implant of claim 1 , wherein the grooves are configured to engage arms of an insertion instrument for insertion and disengage from the arms of the insertion instrument after insertion.

16. The spinal implant of claim 1 , wherein the distal end comprises grooves configured to engage an insertion instrument and further wherein the engagement between the insertion instrument and grooves is such that the spinal implant can rotate with respect to the insertion instrument upon insertion.

17. The spinal implant of claim 1 , further comprising one or more openings extending through the anterior side and one or more openings extending through the posterior side, and wherein at least one of the anterior side openings aligns with at least one of the posterior side openings to allow for bone growth through the implant.

18. The spinal implant of claim 1 , wherein the opening is shaped to receive packing material.

19. The spinal implant of claim 1 , further comprising packing material placed in the opening, and wherein the packing material comprises bone or synthetic bone material.

20. A spinal implant, comprising:

a body, wherein the body comprises:

a distal end;

a proximal end opposite the distal end;

a top extending between the distal end and the proximal end;

a bottom extending between the distal end and the proximal end opposite the top;

a curved anterior side between said top, said bottom, the distal end, and the proximal end of said body;

a curved posterior side opposite said curved anterior side and between said top, said bottom, said distal end, and said proximal end;

two grooves recessing into said body from and passing through said top to said bottom on said anterior side and said posterior side; and

an opening extending through the body from the top to the bottom.

21. The spinal implant of claim 20 , wherein the top further comprises radially positioned protrusions for contacting a first vertebra, where the protrusions near the anterior side are coarser than protrusions near the posterior side.

22. The spinal implant of claim 21 , wherein at least two of the protrusions differ in height, shape, or both.

23. The spinal implant of claim 21 , wherein a first spacing between a first pair of adjacent protrusions differs from a second spacing between a second pair of adjacent protrusions.

24. The spinal implant of claim 20 , wherein the bottom further comprises radially positioned protrusions for contacting a first vertebra, where the protrusions near the anterior side are coarser than protrusions near the posterior side.

25. The spinal implant of claim 24 , wherein at least two of the protrusions differ in height, shape, or both.

26. The spinal implant of claim 24 , wherein a first spacing between a first pair of adjacent protrusions differs from a second spacing between a second pair of adjacent protrusions.
