Microfluidic pump and valve structures and fabrication methods
View Patent ↗Plastic microfluidic structures having a substantially rigid diaphragm that actuates between a relaxed state wherein the diaphragm sits against the surface of a substrate and an actuated state wherein the diaphragm is moved away from the substrate. As will be seen from the following description, the microfluidic structures formed with this diaphragm provide easy to manufacture and robust systems, as well readily made components such as valves and pumps.
1. A microfluidic device, comprising:
only a single, non-elastomeric substrate having upper and lower surfaces and a fluidic microfeatures formed therein; and
only a single, non-elastomeric membrane disposed immediately adjacent the upper surface of the substrate in an at least partially bonded manner,
wherein the device is characterized by an integrated, monolithic construction and is a two-layer device.
2. The device of claim 1 , wherein the only the single, non-elastomeric substrate and the only the single, non-elastomeric membrane are the same material.
3. The device of claim 1 , wherein the only the single, non-elastomeric membrane has a Young's modulus between about 2 Gpa to 4 Gpa.
4. The device of claim 1 , wherein the fluidic micofeature formed in the only the single, non-elastomeric substrate includes a plurality of separate fluidic microchannels each having an end fluidically intersecting a bond-free region of the only the single, non-elastomeric membrane.
5. The device of claim 1 , wherein the only the single, non-elastomeric substrate and the only the single, non-elastomeric membrane are made from one of polymethyl methacrylate, polystyrene, polycarbonate, and acrylic.
6. The device of claim 1 , wherein the only single, non-elastomeric membrane is solvent bonded to the upper surface of the only the single, non-elastomeric substrate.
7. The device of claim 6 , wherein the only the single, non-elastomeric membrane is solvent bonded to the upper surface of the only the single, non-elastomeric substrate by the action of a weak solvent bonding agent.
8. The device of claim 1 , wherein the only the single, non-elastomeric substrate has a through-hole between the upper surface and the lower surface, wherein the through-hole is aligned entirely within a bond-free region of the only the single, non-elastomeric membrane.
9. The device of claim 8 , wherein the through-hole comprise a membrane-seating region.
