Abstract

High-strength microwave antenna assemblies and methods of use are described herein. The microwave antenna has a radiating portion connected by a feedline to a power generating source, e.g., a generator. Proximal and distal radiating portions of the antenna assembly are separated by a junction member. A reinforcing member is disposed within the junction member to increase structural rigidity.

Claims (32)

1. A microwave antenna assembly for applying microwave energy therapy comprising:

a proximal radiating portion having an inner conductor and an outer conductor, each extending therethrough, the inner conductor disposed within the outer conductor;

a distal radiating portion disposed distally of the proximal radiating portion, with the inner conductor extending at least partially therein;

a junction member having a longitudinal thickness, wherein at least a portion of the junction member is disposed between the proximal and distal radiating portions such that the inner conductor extends therethrough;

a reinforcing member disposed longitudinally at least partially within the junction member and having a diameter greater than a diameter of the inner conductor to provide increased stiffness to the junction member; and

a conductor disposed on a distal end of the reinforcing member and configured to contact an inner perimeter of the distal radiating portion to electrically connect the inner conductor to the distal radiating portion.

2. The microwave antenna assembly according to claim 1 , wherein the reinforcing member further extends into the distal radiating portion.

3. The microwave antenna assembly according to claim 1 , wherein the inner conductor extends through the junction member and is in electrical communication with the distal radiating portion.

4. The microwave antenna assembly according to claim 1 , wherein the reinforcing member is axially spaced from a tapered end of the distal radiating portion.

5. The microwave antenna assembly according to claim 1 , wherein the proximal and distal radiating portions are threadingly coupled to the junction member.

6. The microwave antenna assembly according to claim 1 , wherein the conductor is an electrically conductive wire that extends distally from the distal end of the reinforcing member.

7. The microwave antenna assembly according to claim 1 , wherein the reinforcing member is formed of a dielectric material.

8. The microwave antenna assembly according to claim 1 , wherein the reinforcing member includes a stop integrally formed therewith that retains the reinforcing member against the junction member.

9. The microwave antenna assembly according to claim 1 , wherein the proximal radiating portion is covered at least in part by a cooling chamber.

10. The microwave antenna assembly according to claim 1 , further comprising:

a sensor selected from the group consisting of a temperature sensor, a pressure sensor, and a flow sensor.

11. The microwave antenna assembly according to claim 10 , wherein the sensor is disposed within an inner lumen of the inner conductor.

12. The microwave antenna assembly according to claim 1 , wherein the inner conductor defines a longitudinally extending lumen therethrough; and wherein the microwave antenna assembly includes a thermocouple disposed within the lumen of the inner conductor, and wherein a thermocouple junction of the thermocouple is disposed at a distal tip of the inner conductor.

13. A microwave antenna assembly for applying microwave energy therapy comprising:

a proximal radiating portion having an inner conductor and an outer conductor, each extending therethrough, the inner conductor disposed within the outer conductor;

a distal radiating portion disposed distally of the proximal radiating portion and integrally formed and of a single piece with the inner conductor;

a junction member having a longitudinal thickness, wherein at least a portion of the junction member is disposed between the proximal and distal radiating portions such that the inner conductor extends therethrough, wherein the inner conductor and distal radiating portion reinforce the junction member to provide additional stiffness to the junction member;

a reinforcing member disposed longitudinally at least partially within the junction member; and

a conductor disposed on a distal end of the reinforcing member and configured to contact an inner perimeter of the distal radiating portion to electrically connect the inner conductor to the distal radiating portion.

14. The microwave antenna assembly according to claim 13 , wherein the reinforcing member has a diameter greater than a diameter of the inner conductor to provide increased stiffness to the junction member.

15. The microwave antenna assembly according to claim 14 , further comprising a lumen extending through at least a portion of the proximal radiating portion and opening to the surface of the assembly.

16. The microwave antenna assembly according to claim 13 , wherein the inner conductor has a first diameter and at least one second diameter located at a position at least partially within the junction member.

17. The microwave antenna assembly according to claim 14 , wherein the reinforcing member is spaced an axial distance and separate from a tip of the distal radiating portion.

18. The microwave antenna assembly according to claim 13 , further comprising:

a sensor selected from the group consisting of a temperature sensor, a pressure sensor, and a flow sensor.

19. The microwave antenna assembly according to claim 13 , wherein the sensor is disposed within an inner lumen of the inner conductor.

20. The microwave antenna assembly according to claim 13 , wherein the inner conductor defines a longitudinally extending lumen therethrough; and wherein the microwave antenna assembly includes a thermocouple disposed within the lumen of the inner conductor, and wherein a thermocouple junction of the thermocouple is disposed at a distal tip of the inner conductor.
