Abstract

The invention relates to a polyethylene composition with a bimodal molecular weight distribution and articles made therefrom, such as high topload blow moldings and transmission and distribution pipes. The composition comprises a low-molecular-weight (LMW) ethylene homopolymer component and a homogeneous, high-molecular-weight (HMW) ethylene interpolymer component, wherein the LMW component is characterized as having a molecular weight distribution, MWD L , of less than about 8. The composition is characterized as having a bimodal molecular weight distribution, and a ductile-brittle transition temperature, T db , of less than −20° C. In some embodiments, the HMW component is characterized by a reverse comonomer distribution.

Claims (30)

1. A method of preparing a polyethylene composition comprising a low-molecular-weight (LMW) ethylene homopolymer component and a high-molecular-weight (HMW) ethylene interpolymer component, said method comprising:

polymerizing the low-molecular weight ethylene component in one reactor, and

polymerizing the high-molecular weight ethylene component in a different reactor,

and wherein the two reactors are operated in series or operated in parallel, and

wherein the LMW component has a molecular weight distribution, MWD L , of less than about 8, and

wherein the HMW component has the following properties: a molecular weight distribution, MWD H , less than about 3, and a substantially uniform comonomer distribution or a reverse comonomer distribution, and

wherein the HMW component has a weight average molecular weight, Mw, from about 100,000 to about 600,000 g/mole.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the low-molecular weight ethylene component and the high-molecular weight ethylene component are each polymerized using a slurry polymerization process.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein each slurry polymerization process takes place in a slurry loop or slurry autoclave.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the polymerization processes are operated sequentially.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein a catalyst is injected into each reactor.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein a catalyst is injected into a first reactor, and no catalyst is injected into a second reactor, such that polymerization in the second reactor is accomplished from carry-over catalyst, carry-over live polymer, or combination thereof, each from the first reactor.

7. The method of claim 4 , wherein the same catalyst is injected into each reactor.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the catalyst is a single site catalyst.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the HMW component has an I 21.6 value ranging from about 0.1 to about 1 g/10 min, as determined in accordance with ASTM D-1238 (21.6 kg/190° C.).

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the low-molecular weight ethylene component and the high-molecular weight ethylene component are each polymerized using a gas phase polymerization process.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the polymerization processes are operated sequentially.

12. The method of claim 10 , wherein a catalyst is injected into each reactor.

13. The method of claim 10 , wherein a catalyst is injected into a first reactor, and no catalyst is injected into a second reactor, such that polymerization in the second reactor is accomplished from carry-over catalyst, carry-over live polymer, or a combination thereof, each from the first reactor.

14. The method of claim 11 , wherein the same catalyst is injected into each reactor.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein the catalyst is a single site catalyst.

16. The method of claim 10 , wherein the LMW component has an I 2 value ranging from about 30 to about 2000 g/10 min, as determined in accordance with ASTM D-1238 (2.16 kg/190° C.).

17. The method of claim 10 , wherein the HMW component has an I 21.6 value ranging from about 0.1 to about 1 g/10 min, as determined in accordance with ASTM D-1238 (21.6 kg/190° C.).

18. A method of preparing a polyethylene composition comprising a low-molecular-weight (LMW) ethylene homopolymer component and a high-molecular-weight (HMW) ethylene interpolymer component, said method comprising:

dry blending the low molecular weight component and the high molecular weight component, and

wherein the LMW component has a molecular weight distribution, MWD L , of less than about 8, and

wherein the HMW component has the following properties: a molecular weight distribution, MWD H , less than about 3, and a substantially uniform comonomer distribution or a reverse comonomer distribution, and

wherein the HMW component has a weight average molecular weight, Mw, from about 100,000 to about 600,000 g/mole.

19. The method of claim 18 , wherein the LMW component has an I 2 value ranging from about 30 to about 2000 g/10 min, as determined in accordance with ASTM D-1238 (2.16 kg/190° C.); and the HMW component has an I 21.6 value ranging from about 0.1 to about 1 g/10 min, as determined in accordance with ASTM D-1238 (21.6 kg/190° C.).
