Abstract

An volume filling device for treatment of obesity is placed outside the stomach wall of the patient to reduce the inner volume of the stomach, thereby affecting the patient's appetite. By providing the volume filling device outside the stomach wall, contact with stomach acids is avoided, thereby increasing the life of the device.

Claims (22)

1. An apparatus for treating obesity of an obese patient, comprising:

a volume filling device adapted to be completely invaginated by a wall portion of a stomach of the patient,

wherein the volume filling device is adapted to be placed on the outside of the wall portion, with an outer surface of the volume filling device resting against the outside of the wall portion and such that a volume of a food cavity of the stomach is reduced in size by a volume having a treatment effect on the obesity,

wherein the volume filling device is formed of at least two distinct portions, each of which having a size allowing it to be inserted in the patient through a gastroscopic instrument, said at least two distinct portions being configured to be reversibly interconnected to each other such that a first one of said least two distinct portions has at least one point of direct contact with another one of said at least two distinct portions.

2. The apparatus according to claim 1 , further comprising an inlet port comprising a fluid connection adapted to connect the volume filling device to a gastroscopic instrument.

3. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the at least two distinct portions are configured to form the volume filling device having an elongated shape, and wherein the volume filling device is adapted to be invaginated, such that the elongated shape of the volume filling device is substantially aligned with a food passageway of the patient.

4. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the volume filling device has a volume of less than 200 ml.

5. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the apparatus is adapted to be operated by an instrument, and wherein the apparatus comprises a holding device adapted to be held by the instrument.

6. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein at least a portion of the volume filling device is provided with at least one of: at least one coating and at least one layer, and wherein the at least one layer or at least one coating comprises at least one of: Parylene, polytetrafluoroethylene, polyurethane, silicon, PTFE, metal and any multilayer combination thereof.

7. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the volume filling device has a varying circumference, such that each of the at least two distinct portions has a greater circumference than a central portion of the volume filling device located between the at least two distinct portions, such that the fixation of the volume filling device is improved when the volume filling device is invaginated in the wall portion of the stomach of the patient.

8. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the volume filling device comprises an expandable structure adapted to expand when the device is invaginated in the stomach wall, and wherein said expandable structure comprises a bellows shape adapted to take into account the fibrosis surrounding the device when implanted, such that the movement of the bellows is substantially un-affected by said fibrosis.

9. The apparatus according to claim 1 , further comprising a fixation portion for fixating the volume filling device to the outside of the stomach wall, when the volume filling device is invaginated by the wall portion of the stomach of the patient.

10. The apparatus according to claim 9 , wherein the fixation portion comprising at least one through hole adapted to receive at least one suture for fixating the volume filling device to the outside of the wall portion of the stomach of the patient.

11. The apparatus according to claim 1 , further comprising an operation device for post-operatively and non-invasively adjusting the volume of the volume filling device by moving fluid between a reservoir and the volume filling device.

12. The apparatus according to claim 11 , comprising a sensor or sensing device adapted to be implanted in the body of the patient, wherein the sensor or sensing device is adapted to directly or indirectly sense the food intake of the patient, and wherein the sensor or sensing device provides input to the operation device, such that the operation device can post-operatively and non-invasively adjust the volume of the volume filling device on the basis of input from the sensor or sensing device.

13. The apparatus according to claim 11 , wherein the operation device comprises a motor, a pump or a motor and pump.

14. The apparatus according to claim 13 , further comprising a reversing device for altering the direction of the fluid flow, such that when fluid is moved in a first direction the volume filling device is expanded, and when fluid is moved in a second direction the volume filling device is contracted.

15. The apparatus according to claim 11 , wherein the volume filling device has at least one of: electronics and an energy source for the operation device which is integrated into the volume filling device.

16. The apparatus according to claim 1 , further comprising an implantable reservoir adapted to be placed in the abdomen of the patient and in fluid connection with the volume filling device, so as to allow the volume of the volume filling device to be altered by moving fluid between the reservoir and the volume filling device.

17. The apparatus according to claim 16 , wherein the reservoir further comprises a movable wall adapted to adjust an outer volume of the reservoir so as to move the fluid between the reservoir and the volume filling device.

18. The apparatus according to claim 16 , further comprising a control unit configured to be operatively connected to the reservoir so as to control the movement of fluid between the reservoir and the volume filling device.

19. The apparatus according to claim 18 , wherein the control unit is configured to be controlled by means of a wireless remote control and a subcutaneously placed device adapted to be manipulated non-invasively by the patient.
